The second women’s major of the year gets underway tomorrow, and I’ve taken a look at which players can get off to a fast start in the US Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club.

Whilst there is some breeze swirling around early in the round, it is forecast to strengthen as the day goes on, with gusts exceeding 20mph for the afternoon starters. Though a touch cooler in the morning, the early starters should still be better placed and I have four selections who will all look to take advantage of their early tee-time.

1 pt Sei Young Kim each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 40/1

Start time: 07:51

First up is Sei Young Kim. After a relatively disappointing 2023 campaign, the 2020 Women’s PGA champion has looked much better in 2024, where her consistently quick starts have given her a better base from which to perform.

She hasn’t missed a cut in 10 starts and has already bettered last year’s top-10 tally by one, gaining two 3rd-place finishes in the T-Mobile Match Play and Honda LPGA Thailand, and she comes into this week off the back of finishing 7th last time out in the Mizuho Americas Open.

The Korean started a little slowly there but got better as the week went on, however this hasn’t been the case for most of the season.

Kim ranks 2nd in birdie-or-better average and 3rd in round one scoring on tour in 2024. She fired 6-under to take the first-round lead in the T-Mobile Match play and shot the same score to sit 2nd after the opening rounds of both the Honda LPGA Thailand and the LA Championship; whilst a round of -4 was enough to sit 4th after 18 holes of the Drive On Championship.

Showing quality right across her game this season, she has the skills to handle this test and I’m hoping she can make use of them to get off to the best possible start tomorrow.

0.75 pts Megan Khang each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 50/1

Start time: 08:13

Megan Khang’s tee-to-green quality made her an appealing candidate outright this week. Though not quite making the picks there, she has an advantageous early tee-time and is an attractive price to go well tomorrow.

Although her results may not be quite as strong in 2024 as they were last year, she is still playing plenty of quality golf, ranking 5th on the LPGA tee-to-green.

She has done most of her best work in round one in the last two seasons, ranking 17th in round one scoring in 2022 and 7th in 2023. Whilst not quite as strong this season, she’s still a perfectly solid 35th in round one scoring and comes into this week after her best start of the season, shooting -3 to sit in 6th after the opening round of the Mizuho Americas Open.

Khang has had some good starts in this event, positioned in 6th place after 18 holes in 2017 and was 3rd after the first round in 2021. In addition, she also hit the top-10 after round one of both the Chevron Championship and Women’s Open last year.

0.75 pts Gabriela Ruffels each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 55/1

Start time: 08:35

Gabriela Ruffels is enjoying a strong rookie season on the LPGA and as a regularly fast starter who can get very hot on the greens, she looks a lively one for the first-round lead this week.

Ruffels has recorded three 3rd-place finishes in 10 starts this year, two of which have come on her last two starts, in the Cognizant Founders Cup and Mizuho Americas Open.

Strong starts were the basis for each of those performances, looking especially good in that last start at Liberty National, firing a round of -4 to sit 2nd after the opening round. This was the second time she’d held such a position after 18 holes this season, after shooting -8 in round one of the Ford Championship, and she also started strongly in our first major of the year, the Chevron Championship, with a score of -3 enough for a top-5 first-round finish.

This all means that Ruffels ranks 12th on tour in birdie-or-better average in round one this season and 14th scoring average. Combined with a pretty complete all-round game that looks readymade for major championships, I’m expecting her to be near the top on day one.

0.5 pts Alexandra Forsterling each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 90/1

Start time: 07:29

We’ll round out with Alexandra Forsterling. I’ve already put the German star up in my outright preview and with an early tee-time, I’m hoping she can start that quest for a major title with haste.

Forsterling’s rise has been meteoric since the end of last season, winning four time across her last 11 starts on the Ladies European Tour. The last two of those victories have come back to back on her latest two starts on the tour and she started well in both of them, shooting -5 to sit 5th after the opening round of the Aramco Series – Tampa and in a testing first round in the Amundi German Masters two weeks ago, she shot -2 to place 4th.

Wedged in between those two victories are three starts in the U.S on the LPGA, where she performed with credit. Making the cut on each occasion and starting pretty well in two of them; especially so in the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship, where an opening round of -2 saw her sat in 14th place.

Despite missing the cut on her only previous major appearance in this event in 2022, Forsterling is much improved and with confidence high after her recent win at home in Germany, I’m expecting her to come flying out of the blocks this week.
