US Open Day 3 Tips
- 3 pts Jon Rahm (3rd Round Leader Top 10) @ 23/10

The field took another thumping in the second round of the 125th US Open yesterday, creating a wide-open contest as we head into the weekend at Oakmont Country Club
Leaderboard after day two:
1st – Sam Burns (-3)
2nd – J.J. Spaun (-2)
3rd – Viktor Hovland (-1)
T4 – Adam Scott (E)
T4 – Ben Griffin (E)
T6 – Victor Perez (+1)
T6 – Thriston Lawrence (+1) *thru 17*
Ten players sat under par after the first round, but that number was reduced to just three by the end of day two, with all but five of this week’s competitors now over par. The brutal conditions at Oakmont caused delays throughout Friday, leaving 13 players still to finish their second rounds.
None of those remaining on course are in a position to impact the top five, and a week on from his playoff loss in Canada, Sam Burns now leads heading into the weekend after a phenomenal five-under 65 in round two. Despite all his talent, Burns has just one top-10 finish in a major, and it will be a real test of his mental strength to see if he can stay the course over the next two days.
Overnight leader J.J. Spaun battled to a two-over 72, sliding just one spot to second. Meanwhile, Viktor Hovland had an up-and-down day but starts today in solo third as our third under-par player, two shots off the lead with 36 holes to play.
Aussie veteran Adam Scott fired his second consecutive round of 70 to move into fourth at level par. He’s joined on that score by recent Charles Schwab Challenge winner and Memorial Tournament runner-up, Ben Griffin.
Just one shot further back is Frenchman Victor Perez, aided by a fabulous hole-in-one on the par-3 6th on Friday. The last man of our top seven is Thriston Lawrence, who briefly held a three-shot lead at six-under but was eventually reeled in by Oakmont’s punishing setup. The South African will need to hole a three-footer for par when play resumes, just to stay within four shots of the lead.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler improved from a 73 in round one to a 71 yesterday and now sits at +4, seven shots off the pace. Surprisingly, it’s been his putting that has kept him in it so far, but if he sharpens up his ball striking, he’s sure to be a factor over the weekend. Joining him at +4 are Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa, whilst Rory McIlroy birdied two of his last four holes to comfortably see it through to the weekend.
Not so fortunate is defending champion Bryson DeChambeau. The two-time winner struggled to a seven-over 77 on Friday, finishing at +10 and missing his first U.S. Open cut since 2017.
Other high-profile casualties at the halfway stage include Ludvig Aberg, Patrick Cantlay, Joaquin Niemann, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, and 2016 Oakmont winner Dustin Johnson.
SELECTIONS
Oakmont has been brutally difficult over the first two days, but with plenty of rain falling overnight - and more forecast throughout today - some of the fire will no doubt have come out of the greens. While that won’t make the course easy, it's natural to expect some better scoring on moving day in more receptive conditions.
The outright selections have been a mixed bag, with headliner Bryson DeChambeau a huge disappointment. However, Keegan Bradley finished with three birdies in his last five holes to move into a tie for 12th at +3, six shots off the lead. We also have Jordan Spieth (+5) and Harris English (+7) through to a weekend that is extremely hard to call.
I’m going to leave the win market alone at this point, and with that late second-round finish meaning we have no third-round matchups to look at, I’ve combed through the side markets instead and found one selection that looks of value.
3 pts Jon Rahm (3rd Round Leader Top 10) @ 23/10
These putting surfaces have got the better of Jon Rahm over the first two rounds, leaving him in 23rd position, seven shots back of Sam Burns. However, the greens should be a little more forgiving today, and with his iron play looking better than most, I fancy the Spaniard to shoot one of the rounds of the day and move inside the top 10—much like he did in the third round of the PGA Championship.
He opened with a one-under 69 on Thursday thanks to some excellent ball striking, ranking first off-the-tee (as well as fifth in driving distance and eighth in driving accuracy), fourth in greens in regulation, and 19th in approach. However, he struggled on the greens, ranking 102nd.
The putter again let him down yesterday, as he ranked 142nd, and he also began to lose control of the driver, ultimately resulting in a five-over 75. That being said, his approach play remained excellent - ranking third - and if he can get the driver back under control, he should be able to score well in today’s more receptive conditions.
Rahm sits just two shots outside the top 10 at present—exactly where he was heading into the weekend at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. There, he fired a four-under 67 to move into fifth place with 18 holes to play, and I’m expecting a similar outcome at the end of today’s round.
