Jon Rahm/Tyrrell Hatton to beat Bryson DeChambeau/Justin Thomas
The Ryder Cup should get off to an explosive start this year, as the opening match-up pits the newly-formed duo of Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas against the familiar pairing of Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton.
Whilst Bryson and JT will team up for the first time, Rahm and Hatton took the responsibility of playing the first foursomes session in Rome two years ago, beating Scottie Scheffler & Sam Burns 4 & 3. They also won in the Saturday foursomes against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele – a win that took Rahm’s own personal record in foursomes to 4 – 0 – 0.
Thomas has an excellent Ryder Cup record, but this has been his weakest format, losing three of five matches. Meanwhile, Bryson has lost each time he’s teed it up in alternate shot.
When we also consider JT’s poor ball-striking form – ranking as the worst player here over the last three months – and Bryson’s relatively subdued form of late, this looks like a terrific opportunity for Team Europe to quiet the home crowd early doors.
Prediction: Win for Team Europe
Scottie Scheffler/Russell Henley to beat Ludvig Aberg/Matt Fitzpatrick
Moving on to the second match and this is where we’ll see world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler enter the fray, as he teams up with rookie Russell Henley against the surprise partnership of Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Scheffler has only played two foursomes matches at the Ryder Cup previously, losing both at Marco Simone in 2023. However, even by his lofty standards in 2023, he’s a more formidable player now.
In addition, whilst this pairing with Russell Henley lacks Ryder Cup experience, they did team up together to good effect at last year’s Presidents Cup, winning a foursomes and fourballs contest.
The biggest surprise of the morning comes from the separation of Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland, who won both foursomes matches together in 2023.
Whilst Matt Fitzpatrick is in great form, he has only won one match from eight in the Ryder Cup – in fourballs – and up against the first (Scheffler) and fourth-best (Henley) performing players over the last three months, it’s hard to see that record improving on Friday morning.
Prediction: Win for Team USA
Rory McIlroy/Tommy Fleetwood to beat Harris English/Collin Morikawa
The third match of the event welcomes Rory McIlroy to the party. He will again tee it up alongside Tommy Fleetwood to take on Collin Morikawa and Harris English – another new line-up.
Rory has had many great foursomes partnerships across his seven Ryder Cups, but none quite so effective as the one he formed with Tommy Fleetwood two years ago in Italy, where they won both ties. Like the aforementioned Rahm, they were victories that continued Tommy’s 100% record in the format, after he also won both matches with Francesco Molinari in 2018.
Harris English has zero professional experience of Ryder Cup foursomes, gaining his only point on debut at Whistling Straits in fourballs. That was also the renewal in which Collin Morikawa was introduced to the event and was helped to two foursomes wins by Dustin Johnson, but he struggled last time, losing his solo foursomes contest and taking one point from four overall.
The level of comfort felt by the Euro pair is obviously a huge plus and when you also factor in their rankings of 2nd (Rory) and 3rd (Tommy) in SG: Total this year, they’ll surely have too much for their American opponents.
Prediction: Win for Team Europe
Xander Schauffele & Patrick Cantlay vs Viktor Hovland & Robert MacIntyre
The opening session of the 2025 Ryder Cup finishes with Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay renewing their tried-and-tested partnership. They will be up against the new but potentially blockbuster twosome of Viktor Hovland and Robert MacIntyre.
Winning two out of two foursomes matches in the 2021 Ryder Cup, and three out of four when paired together in the Presidents Cup, the partnership of Schauffele and Cantlay has been one of the cornerstones of recent U.S. sides. That being said, that did all come tumbling down at Marco Simone, where they lost both foursomes matches, and they’ll want to put things right this week.
Viktor Hovland had a challenging time on debut at Whistling Straits but enjoyed immense success in 2023, playing all five matches and winning three, including each in foursomes. However, that was alongside Ludvig Aberg. He is now paired up with Robert MacIntyre, who has zero foursomes experience in the event and has been separated from his Marco Simone mentor Justin Rose.
Bob is of course a different, more confident player now after becoming a two-time PGA Tour winner in the interim, and based on personality and skillset, this is a partnership that could work.
Both teams have played to a similar level this year overall as individuals, making this final match-up the toughest to call. Therefore, I’ll be leaving it out of my selections but at a push, I’d just about side with the experience of the Americans.
Prediction: Win for Team USA
