There is nothing in the weather forecast to suggest that there will be any significant draw bias in the opening round. It is predicted to be cloudy and warm for morning and afternoon starters alike, with a small threat of thunderstorms lingering through the day. Meanwhile, the stronger afternoon breeze isn’t enough to hinder those later starters’ attempts at making a fast start.

With that, I believe we can pick freely across tomorrow’s tee times to find the first-round leader at Detroit Golf Club.

1 pt Cameron Young each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 45/1

Start time: 13:05

First up is the in-form Cameron Young. He’s started positively on his last two events and possessing an excellent record at Detroit GC, where he’s shot many a low round, he can top the leaderboard on day one.

Young’s season took a little time to get going but it has really taken off in recent weeks. He recorded a 7th-place finish in the Truist Championship six starts ago and has gone better than that on two occasions since, finishing 4th in the Canadian Open and US Open in back-to-back weeks. This upturn in form has been engineered by improved approach play, complimenting the quality he’s shown off-the-tee and on the greens all season.

He laid the foundations for his superb US Open display with a sound start, shooting level par to sit 11th after round one. He followed that with another strong first-round performance last week, occupying 6th place after 18 holes due to a five-under 65.

Young has played here on two occasions, finishing 2nd in 2022 and 6th last year. He’s fired six rounds in the 60s, including an eye-catching 63 in round two in 2022, which was the joint-lowest round of the week.

1 pt Wyndham Clark each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 50/1

Start time: 07:18

Wyndham Clark was a first-round machine at the start of the season. He returned to that fast-starting form at TPC River Highlands, and as another player who has gone well on both previous visits here, he made a lot of sense in this market.

Clark had been enduring a difficult spell leading up to the Travelers Championship, recording just one top-40 finish in his previous eight starts. However, he turned that around due to some improved approach play, finishing 18th.

He started strong there, firing a six-under 64 to sit 3rd thru 18 holes. It was his strongest start since he opened with a 65 in the RBC Heritage seven starts earlier and was reminiscent of his early-season performances, when he claimed the first-round lead in Arnold Palmer Invitational and Phoenix Open.

Clark has played here twice before, finishing 17th in 2019 and 8th in 2022. He’s shot under par in every round, and returning for the first time in three years as an improved player, he can find another low one tomorrow.

0.75 pts Stephan Jaeger each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 70/1

Start time: 12:43

Stephan Jaeger has been a reliable first-round performer in 2025, ranking 4th in the last three months. He has a taking record at Detroit Golf Club and looking strong in approach and putting in recent weeks, he is a standout candidate to start strongly.

Jaeger has shown great consistency this season, missing just three cuts in 18 starts. He produced a best of 3rd in the Sony Open at the beginning of the year, then recorded a third top-10 finish of the season in the Truist Championship five starts ago. The majority of these top performances have been achieved through quality with his irons and on the greens, ranking 11th and 18th in these areas respectively.

The German has had five first-round top-10s since March. His best start over this time came in the Valspar Championship, where he shot a four-under 67 to finish the first round tied for the lead. He also sat 4th after round one in the PGA Championship and CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

Jaeger missed the cut here in 2019 and 2024 but sandwiched between them are encouraging finishes of 5th in 2022 and 9th in 2023. His 63 on day four in 2023 was one of the best rounds of the week, and he has several other rounds in the mid-60s.

0.75 pts Erik Van Rooyen each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 80/1

Start time: 08:02

I’m going to finish with South Africa’s Erik Van Rooyen. He had every chance of winning here last year before eventually finishing 6th. With numerous low rounds under his belt in recent starts, he can end round one at the head of the pack.

Van Rooyen arrives after missing three of his last five cuts. Although, two of those were in major championship and he really hasn’t been that far away on his last two starts.

Prior to those events he was a distant 2nd to Scottie Scheffler in the CJ CUP Byron Nelson – an event where he shot rounds of 66-67-65-63. Whilst his final finishing positions haven’t quite matched that effort, he has continued to find low rounds, opening with a 65 in the Truist Championship and a 67 in the Canadian Open. Meanwhile, at the Charles Schwab Challenge he shot a 64 in round two and closed out the week with a 65 – the best score of anyone in that final round.

Van Rooyen missed his first two cuts in this event but improved considerably last year, finishing 6th. His second-round 64 was the joint-best score of the entire week and gives me confidence that he can start fast in the Rocket Classic.
