It's forecast to be a bright, warm, and predominantly calm day tomorrow, and with all tee times congested between 08:30 and 10:42, we don't have to worry about any draw bias.
Though we have two courses in use during the first round – Seaside and Plantation – the first-round leader market will be settled on scores across both courses combined, not at each individual setup.
Plantation is a par 72, compared to Seaside being a par 70, and those two extra par 5s usually makes the former the more scoreable course. Indeed, in six of the last eight editions of this event, a player from Plantation has at least shared the first-round lead, and with that in mind, I'm going to focus my attention solely on that course.
SELECTIONS
1 pt Keith Mitchell each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 55/1
Start time: 09:58
First up is Sea Island resident, Keith Mitchell. Although his record in this event isn't as good as you'd expect, he does seem to prefer playing at Plantation over the Seaside Course. As someone who ranks second in this field in first-round performance this year, I'm expecting him to find a low one on Thursday.
Mitchell was playing some terrific golf at the beginning of the season, missing just two cuts in his first 13 appearances. He picked up seven top-25s over this time, including a runner-up finish in the Corales Puntacana Championship.
He lost his way thereafter, but there were positive signs two starts ago in the Baycurrent Classic. Beginning with a four-over-75 to sit 63rd on day one, he battled back with some heavy scoring over the next three rounds to finish 10th, shooting a 62 in round two and a 63 on the final day.
If he can bring that level of birdie-making back to his preferred bermudagrass, Mitchell is sure to be a feature here, especially at the Plantation Course – a venue at which he's put together two 66s and three 67s, often outperforming his efforts at Seaside.

0.75 pts Doc Redman each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 110/1
Start time: 09:58
I’m going to take a chance on Doc Redman as my second selection, who tees it up on a sponsor's exemption this week. He’s hit the ball well on a couple of encouraging PGA Tour appearances recently, and having previously shown a liking for the Plantation Course, he can explode out of the blocks in Georgia.
Redman has plied his trade on the Korn Ferry Tour this season and has been largely disappointing, hitting the top-25 just twice in 15 outings. However, he’s looked like a different player back at this level during the fall, finishing ninth in the Sanderson Farms Championship and 20th in the Bank of Utah Championship.
He struck it superbly at the Sanderson Farms in Jackson, ranking first in SG: Approach and SG: Ball-Striking, while a stronger all-round performance helped him to that 20th-place finish in Utah. His scoring power has been evident at each, shooting seven out of eight rounds in the 60s, including a pair of 65s in Jackson.
Born in North Carolina, going to college in South Carolina, and currently residing in Florida, Redman is extremely familiar with playing golf in this part of the USA.
Although that hasn’t translated to an especially strong record in this event, finishing inside the top 25 just once in five starts, he does often perform at Plantation. He has never shot an over-par round here, and he particularly impressed in 2021, opening with a seven-under 65 to sit inside the top 10 after round one. Added to his recent uptick in form, he could be among the leaders tomorrow.
