The Cognizant Classic gets underway at PGA National on Thursday. With the prospect of some typically volatile weather, I’m hoping to use that to my advantage to find the day one leader.
Our resident golf tipster Jamie Worsley is here with three picks he fancies to start fast in his Cognizant Classic 2026 FRL Betting Tips, which you can check out below...

Temperatures are forecast to be a little cool as the first wave begins at 6.45am tomorrow, but it will soon rise to around 20°C by 10am and is set to be accompanied by sunshine throughout.
A gentle 6mph breeze will also greet those early starters. Though it steadily rises over the course of the morning, it steps up a gear in the afternoon, with the later tee times tested by a persistent 10-15mph breeze, gusting at upwards of 20mph.
That should add a significant layer of difficulty to this exposed, penal layout, favouring players fortunate enough to be out in the calmer morning conditions. With that in mind, I’ve focused exclusively on that side of the draw in my search for this week’s first-round leader.
1.25 pt Keith Mitchell each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 35/1
Start time: 7.45am
As both a perennial first-round and East Coast performer, there’s no better place to begin than with Keith Mitchell. The 2019 Cognizant Classic champion has been hitting the ball well in the early part of the year but has predictably struggled on the West Coast greens. Now returning to putting surfaces on which he’s excelled in the past, he’s primed to make a fast start tomorrow morning.
Mitchell hasn’t missed a cut across his five outings in 2026, finishing highest when 11th at the Farmers Insurance Open. His long game has looked in fine shape, ranking 16th in SG: Off-the-Tee and 29th in greens-in-regulation, and although he’s yet to make his mark in round one, this is the perfect time to strike.
He ranks 3rd in this field in round-one performance over the last 12 months. A superb nine-under 61 in the opening round of the Truist Championship was his standout display in this regard, and he also claimed a share of the first-round lead at the Valspar Championship and Houston Open.
Mitchell has played in seven of the last eight renewals of this event and aside from his 2019 victory, he also recorded top-10s in 2022 and 2024. He made his best start ever last year, firing a seven-under 64 to sit 5th after round one, and with plenty of other rounds in the 60s to call on, he can go four better on Thursday.

1 pt Jordan Smith each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 50/1
Start time: 8.33am
Jordan Smith has made an eye-catching start to his rookie season on the PGA Tour, picking up a first top-20 when 16th in Phoenix three weeks ago. Although this will be his first time at PGA National, it’s a venue where Europeans have enjoyed great success, and as a high-class, precise ball-striker, I fancy him to immediately take to the venue.
The Englishman began the year at the Sony Open and produced a more promising display than his 66th-place finish suggests. He built on that with a 27th at The AmEx next time out and then bounced back from a missed cut at the Farmers Insurance Open to finish 16th at TPC Scottsdale on his latest appearance.
As you’d expect, he’s hitting the ball strongly, ranking 6th in greens-in-regulation and sitting inside the top 40 in both SG: Off-the-Tee and SG: Approach. He also showed a spark of first-round form at The AmEx, shooting a birdie-laden 64 to sit 12th after round one.
Smith had several first-round top-10s last year, including claiming a share of the lead after 18 holes of the Joburg Open, and with a game tailor-made for this setup, he looks well placed to make another swift start here.

1 pt S.H. Kim each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 60/1
Start time: 7.57am
S.H. Kim has been among the best first-round performers in 2026, sitting inside the top 40 in each of his four appearances. He’s also a former first-round leader at PGA National, and with his driving and putting currently thriving, he can repeat that effort this week.
Returning to the PGA Tour after an excellent 2025 on the Korn Ferry Tour, Kim finished 13th in the Sony Open and 16th in The AmEx in the first two events. While he hasn’t contended on his last two starts, he has continued to drive the ball impressively at both Torrey Pines and TPC Scottsdale, so there are still plenty of positives.
He’s an extremely low scorer when he finds his stride and that has been evident in the early weeks of the year, particularly in the opening round. A seven-under 63 saw him into 3rd place on day one of the Sony Open and he followed that with another opening 63 to again sit 3rd after the first round of The AmEx.
Kim also started well on his first visit to PGA National, producing a three-under 68 to sit 14th on day one in 2023. He stepped that up the following year, when his seven-under 64 was enough to share the first-round lead and arriving in better form, he can find another low one on Thursday.
