The PGA Championship brings together the strongest and most complete field of the year so far, which creates plenty of opportunities in the extra markets. From which I’ve extracted three selections that can give us some added interest at Valhalla Golf Club this week.

4 pts Hideki Matsuyama Top Japanese @ EVS

I’m going to start with the Top Japanese player betting and I believe Hideki Matsuyama looks a steal at even money to lead home his countrymen once again this week.

Hideki has had an excellent year so far, winning the Genesis Invitational in sensational fashion; where he closed the event with a 9-under 62 to win by three strokes. He followed that with two top 10s in his next three starts and entered The Masters strongly fancied. Though not quite living up to expectations there, his 38th-place finish gave us little to be concerned about.

He’s hitting the ball well and is a strong long iron player. Having recorded several wins on bentgrass greens - including his solo major victory to date in the 2021 Masters - he looks a good fit for Valhalla and indeed, he finished a solid 35th here in 2014 on just his second PGA Championship start.

The proven credentials of Matsuyama are not replicated by the other three Japanese players in this week’s field, for all they’re a trio of talented youngsters. Between them, Keita Nakajima, Takumi Kanaya and Ryo Hisatsune have made 14 major appearances and made just one cut, as Kanaya finished 58th in the 2019 Masters.

Though Kanaya and Hisatsune have largely played well this year, it’s hard to envisage their accuracy-dependent ball-striking games transferring to this mammoth course. Nakajima is rightly rated the second-favourite in this market and whilst he has more power and enjoyed a DP World Tour breakthrough in India earlier this year, he hasn’t shown enough for me to feel he is a real threat to Hideki here.

Matsuyama of course withdrew before the start of last week’s Wells Fargo Championship. However, the reason given there was a tightness in his back and it’s fair to presume that was more precautionary prior to this week. Having not missed a major cut since the 2019 Open Championship, he excels himself in these events and with the lack of quality major form on offer from the others, he could well have this market sewn up by Friday evening.

3 pts Byeong Hun An Top 20 finish @ 21/10

Byeong Hun An has been in terrific form this year and will be hoping to capitalise on this to produce the best major finish of his career this week. I’m hoping he does just that and follows a first Masters top 20 last month, with a first in the PGA Championship this week.

An started the year with finishes of 4th and 2nd in Hawaii and barring his back-to-back missed cuts in THE PLAYERS Championship and Texas Open, he’s maintained that form throughout the season.

He’s hit the top 25 on a further six occasions and has recorded another two top 5s on his last two starts; coming when 4th in the CJ CUP Byron Nelson and last week he had the perfect tune-up with an excellent 3rd at Quail Hollow.

The Korean is hitting the ball typically well, ranking 12th in greens-in-regulation and relies on his immense power to rank 25th off-the-tee. He’s one of the strongest long iron players in this field, ranking 12th from 175-200 yards and 22nd from 200yds+, and with the short game also looking sharp of late, he has a sound all-round profile for Valhalla.

An’s best PGA Championship finish to date came in the 2020 edition at TPC Harding Park, where he finished 22nd. Though he did double his top 20 major tally at Augusta, finishing 16th, after recording his first in the 2019 US Open. As a runner-up at the Memorial Tournament and possessing several top 10s at Bay Hill, his form on championship tests is strong and playing better than ever in 2024, this suitable setup looks the ideal spot for him to record his best major finish.

0.5 pts Jesper Svensson each-way (1/4 - 3 places) Top Nordic @ 30/1

Jesper Svensson has been one of the breakout stars of the DPWT this year. Owning a strong all-round game that is enhanced by his modern brand of power-packed ball-striking, he can give some of the more famous names something to think about in this Top Nordic market this week.

Svensson’s rookie season on the DPWT has taken him to six top 20s in 12 starts and after recording runner-up finishes in the South African Open and Bahrain Championship, he earned his breakthrough win in the Singapore Classic three starts ago.

He excels most with driver, ranking 19th on tour this season and is a lengthy 8th in driving distance. Having said that, he’s gaining strokes right across his game, possessing little in the way of weakness and as a top-25 par 4 scorer, he has an appealing skillset for Valhalla.

Svensson is making his major debut this week, though he looks one of the more well-suited to this setup of this select group of players. It is a very competitive market, with some more proven types such as Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland at the top of the betting, but this is reflected in his pricing towards the bottom here and makes him an interesting each-way price to be the Top Nordic player at this appropriately-named venue.
