Irish Open 2025 FRL Tips: Weather will set the tone at the K Club

The Irish Open gets underway at the K Club on Thursday, and the weather looks likely to play a starring role. I’ve picked out three players who look well placed to set the early pace, with the morning starters holding the edge on day one.
Conditions are forecast to be reasonably cool throughout the opening round, with a stiff breeze and rain a lingering feature. However, both of these elements are predicted to be more challenging in the afternoon.
The day will begin with gentle 6mph winds, rising to 10mph by midday, and there’s a small threat of light rain around 10:00. In contrast, the second wave will play much of their first round in wind speeds of 10-12mph – which could gust at upwards of 22mph – and with persistent rain scheduled between 14:00 and 18:00, they look to have the worst of it.
With that, I’m going to focus solely on the morning wave as I look to crack tomorrow’s first-round leader market.

1 pt Jordan Smith each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 45/1
Jordan Smith got off to a fantastic start in last week’s European Masters, firing a seven-under 63 to sit 2nd after round one. That was the latest of a strong book of recent first-round form and having also started well here in 2023, he’s a standout choice to hit the front on Thursday.
Smith is enjoying a typically consistent year on the DP World Tour, missing just one cut in 17 starts and recording five top-10 finishes. He’s played particularly well the last two months, ranking 4th in this field in SG: Total over that time, and he has also been starting strongly, ranking 4th in first-round performance.
That 63 at Crans last week was his best start over this period, but just two events prior to that he shot a three-under 69 to finish day one of the Nexo Championship in 5th place. Meanwhile, back in July, he opened with a four-under 68 in the BMW International Open – enough to end the first round in 6th.
Smith made his debut at the K Club in 2023 and began the event with an impressive six-under 66 to occupy 2nd position after 18 holes. He backed that up with a 65 on day two to enter the weekend in joint-first and currently in great form, I see no reason why he can’t get off to another positive start from this advantageous tee time.

1 pt Angel Ayora each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 55/1
Talented Spanish youngster Angel Ayora has been scoring heavily of late, with much of his best work coming in round one. His strong driving should suit the challenge of the K Club and help him make a fast start tomorrow.
Ayora’s recent results have been as impressive as at any point in his rookie season. He finished 11th in the Soudal Open at the end of May and has since recorded four further top-20s in eight starts, including an 8th-place finish in the European Masters last week.
The driver has been key, ranking 6th in this field over that time. He’s also 15th from tee-to-green and, encouragingly for this market, he ranks 5th in first-round performance.
His best start of the year came at the Soudal Open, where he fired a six-under 65 to share the first-round lead. He then opened with a 66 to sit 4th after the first round of the Italian Open and shot the same score to finish round one of the ISCO Championship in 5th place.
It was this very week in 2024 when Ayora won his first HotelPlanner Tour title in the Rosa Golf Tour, and I expect him to build the foundations of another strong week in Thursday’s first round.

0.75 Guido Migliozzi each-way (1/4 5 places) @ 100/1
Guido Migliozzi was among the first-round leader selections in the European Masters, and he performed well, opening with a four-under 66 to sit 13th after round one. That was his second first-round top-20 in a row and back at another course where he went well in 2023, he’s worth sticking with this week.
Migliozzi had missed six cuts on the spin entering the British Masters two weeks ago, but he halted that run with a 41st-place finish at The Belfry. He backed it up by finishing 13th last week – shooting four rounds in the 60s in an event for the first time this year.
He’s called on his short game in each of those starts, though there has been improvement with his ball-striking. It has been especially pleasing to see the driver under greater control and with six under-par rounds to his name from his last eight, he certainly seems to have found something.
Migliozzi is a player capable of breathtaking golf when he finds form and having finished 16th at the K Club in 2023 – where he shot three under-par rounds, including a six-under 66 in round two – this is the ideal spot for him to continue his upturn in form.
