Challenging conditions are set to be a feature throughout the week in Amsterdam, including tomorrow’s opening round. That being said, there does appear to be one side of the draw that will get the worst of it, which should help us narrow down the field to find the first-round leader at The International.

The early starters are predicted to tee off in a 10-14mph breeze—gusting at upwards of 20mph—with some light rain also in the forecast. Those speeds will rise over the course the day, with the later starters playing in persistent 16-20mph winds, and gusts of 30mph+.

With the heaviest of the rain also falling in the afternoon—between 13:00 and 14:00—players with morning tee times should have the advantage, and that’s where I’ll focus my attention to find the first-round leader this week.

1 pt Ewen Ferguson each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 50/1

Start time: 08:10

Ewen Ferguson has been playing solid golf all season, but he blew all of his other performances out of the water on his latest start, finishing 2nd in the Soudal Open. He put together a couple of tidy round at The International last year and with his first-round form strong in 2025, he can hit the front in round one.

Ferguson has only missed two cuts in 10 starts this season and alongside his runner-up finish in Belgium two weeks ago, he’s recorded two further top-10 finishes.

He ranks 8th in this field in SG: Total over his last five starts, looking particularly good off-the-tee and on the greens, ranking 8th and 11th respectively. Meanwhile, he ranks 9th in first-round performance across the last three months, opening with an under-par round in five of his last six events.

Ferguson began with rounds of 69 and 66 here last year, and after a third-round 71 he entered day four in 9th place. Unfortunately, he slipped down the leaderboard to 23rd, but as a player who is more accomplished in demanding conditions than most in this field, he looks of great value to make a swift start.

0.75 pts Sean Crocker each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 66/1

Start time: 08:50

Sean Crocker performed well on each of his previous visits to The International, finishing 36th in 2019 and 21st last year. He has found his best form of the season in recent weeks, and with two first-round top-fives in his last three starts, he is taken to hit the top of the leaderboard tomorrow.

Crocker recorded five missed cuts, a withdrawal and just one top-25 finish across his first eight starts this season. However, he burst into life when 2nd in the Hainan Classic three starts ago, and again went well when we last saw him, finishing 16th in the Soudal Open.

The American was excellent from tee-to-green in Belgium, ranking 6th, and ranks 28th for the season overall. He also ranks inside the top 25 in first-round performance from the end of February to May—shooting opening rounds of 67 in the Hainan Classic and 66 in the Soudal Open to sit 4th after 18 holes in each event.

Crocker fired a 66 here in the third round in 2019, and repeated that effort in round one last year to hit the top five on day one. After following with a round of 67, he sat in 2nd place at the halfway point and though enduring a disappointing weekend to slip outside the top 20, we have plenty of evidence that he has that low round in him at this venue.

0.75 pts Joe Dean each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 70/1

Start time: 07:30

Having missed the cut in each of his previous four starts, Joe Dean arrested the slide to finish 22nd in Austria last week. He now returns to a course at which he finished 2nd last year, and in much more buoyant mood, he can take advantage of his early tee time tomorrow.

Dean began the year well, recording finishes of 5th in the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, 13th in Bahrain and 28th in Kenya in his first three starts. He then missed those four cuts on the spin, but after starting slowly with a one-over 71 in Austria, he fired three rounds in the 60s to rise to 22nd place by the end of the tournament.

His short game did most of the heavy lifting there, but it is his ball striking that often drives his better performances. If able to combine those areas of his game on Thursday, we may just see a return to the first-round form he showed last year and at the beginning of this.

Dean shot under par for every round in this event last year, resulting in an excellent 2nd-place finish. This included a particularly impressive five-under 66 in round two and if he can replicate that standard of performance, he should be among the leaders in round one this week.

0.5 pts Tapio Pulkkanen each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 110/1

Start time: 07:50

I’m going to take a punt on Tapio Pulkkanen as my last selection. The Finn has lost form of late after initially looking good at the beginning of the year, but on courses that don’t necessarily suit his game. He should relish playing this open and exposed course—of a similar type to those at which he’s excelled throughout his career—and can burst back into life in the Netherlands tomorrow.

Pulkkanen finished inside the top 40 in six of his first eight starts this season and recorded four top-25s, the best of which was a 7th-place finish in the China Open. However, he has no doubt been disappointing in his last four starts, missing each cut by several shots.

He was doing most things well over those first eight starts and I’m particularly excited by the strength of his short game on and around these difficult greens, ranking 10th around-the-greens and 45th in putting this season.

Pulkkanen was also starting events strongly over that earlier period. Indeed, he shot a superb nine-under 62 to take the first-round lead in China. Although we have no course form to guide us, as a player who has recorded finishes of 2nd in Czechia, 3rd in Portugal, 4th in the Dunhill Links and 7th at Ras Al Khaimah—all at open, exposed venues—he looks ideally suited to The International.
