The opening round of the Kenya Open takes place at Karen Country Club tomorrow, where I'm hoping blustery afternoon conditions will hand the advantage to the morning starters.

Play begins at 7.10am, with players greeted by cloudy but relatively warm and calm conditions. It is forecast to brighten up swiftly, accompanied by rising temperatures throughout the day. Meanwhile, as the second wave begins at 12pm, winds are predicted to strengthen, with a steady 9mph breeze and gusts up to 23mph expected through the afternoon.

That looks likely to favour those with pre-lunch tee times, and I've made three first-round leader selections from this part of the draw.

Calum Hill

Start time: 8.00am

Arriving here in fine birdie-making form that has taken him to consecutive runner-up finishes, Calum Hill is an appealing prospect in this market. He's had some quality results at Karen CC, and with his irons at their most promising for several years, he can seize the initiative on Thursday morning.

Hill made little impact in the Dubai double-header to begin the year, but he turned his form around in Bahrain. A splendid second-round 61 saw him take the 36-hole lead there, which he maintained in round three before eventually succumbing to some late pressure on Sunday to finish 2nd

He started slowly in Qatar last time, but his Bahrain disappointments didn't keep him down too long, as he fired rounds of 66 and 67 over the weekend – the best of anyone in the field – to again finish 2nd. Although his reliable putting has played a starring role in these results, he's also hitting his irons superbly, ranking 1st in SG: Approach at Doha Golf Club.

Hill has played at this course three times, and after finishing 66th on debut in 2019, he returned to record back-to-back finishes of 3rd and 8th in 2021. His six-under 65 saw him sit 2nd after round one in 2021, and with additional rounds of 64 and 65 to count on, there's no doubt he has the game to go low.

Darius Van Driel

Start time: 7.50am

Darius Van Driel won this event at Muthaiga Golf Club in 2024 and with two top-10s on his CV at Karen CC, this appears to be a course that also suits his eye. Indeed, his second-round 62 here at the 2021 Kenya Savannah Classic tied the course record, something I'm hoping he can repeat tomorrow.

The Dutchman enjoyed a solid 2025 campaign, producing his best performance when 2nd at the correlating Rinkven International in the Soudal Open. He's made a positive start to this season, finishing 10th at the Dubai Desert Classic, and while missing the cut in Bahrain on his latest outing, this test is a much better fit for this short, steady ball-striker.

He took the first-round lead when he won this event in 2024 and also produced some eye-catching first-round results last year. Most notably, he shared 1st place after 18 holes of both the BMW International Open and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Van Driel is now well positioned to make a similarly strong start this week, and with that 62 still hopefully fresh in his memory, expect him to threaten the top of the leaderboard on Thursday.

Quim Vidal

Start time: 7.10am

I'm going to take a punt on Spanish rookie Quim Vidal at a huge price as my final selection. He's been a consistently strong first-round performer on the HotelPlanner Tour, and with Karen CC suiting this straight hitter better than the wide-open expanses he's encountered in the Middle East so far, this looks like the ideal time to strike.

Vidal earned his breakthrough HotelPlanner Tour title at the Delhi Challenge in March last year – one of five top-10s that helped him secure this step up to the DP World Tour.

He's found the going a little tough at this level up to now, making just two cuts at the Australian and Mauritius Opens. However, this weaker field and more classic, tree-lined test could bring about improvements for a player who has done much of his best work on similar layouts.

If that is the case, Vidal is one to pay seriously close attention to in this market. He's secured five first-round leads on the HotelPlanner Tour in the last two years, beginning with a 64 at the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge and a 65 at the Swiss Challenge in 2024. In addition, respective scores of 66, 65 and 65 took him to the same position at the Kolkata Challenge, Delhi Challenge, and Challenge de Cadiz last year.

The Spaniard continued this theme until the end of the year, sitting 2nd after 18 holes of the Scottish Challenge and Open de Portugal. This looks a great place for him to display that same quick-starting ability on the DP World Tour.
