The Genesis Championship begins in Korea on Thursday, and with some late afternoon gusts on the way, I think the morning starters may just have the advantage in the first-round leader market.

Tomorrow's opening round starts in relatively cool temperatures of around 11°C, quickly rising to the high teens and reaching 20°C in the afternoon. This will be accompanied by little more than a puff of wind throughout the morning; however, it is predicted to increase for the later starters, with gusts of around 15mph persisting over the course of the afternoon.

Whilst they're not the most severe wind speeds imaginable, they should impact how this exposed course plays, and it's enough to make me side with the morning tee times at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club.

Julien Guerrier

Start time: 07:10

France's Julien Guerrier has made some promising starts in recent events, and as a strong driver who has found form in approach, he can take advantage of tomorrow morning's benign conditions.

Guerrier has recorded his two best finishes of the season over his last seven starts, finishing 8th in the British Masters at the end of August and 16th in the Open de Espana two starts ago. He arrives in Korea after a 50th-place finish in the DP World India Championship – an event where he produced one of his standout approach displays of the season.

He's gaining strokes with every club, but it's with the driver he excels, combining power with accuracy to rank 40th. He sits 21st in this field in SG: Total over the last three months and even more encouraging for this market, he ranks 14th over the same period in first-round performance.

Guerrier started particularly well four starts ago in the Open de France, firing a five-under 66 to finish the first round in 2nd place. He's since opened with rounds of 68 in Spain and 69 in India to sit inside the top 20 after 18 holes. With plenty in his favour, he can make another fast start on Thursday.

Jacob Skov Olesen

Start time: 07:00

Jacob Skov Olesen has enjoyed an excellent rookie season, where his ability to start quickly has been regularly on show. He's thriving in approach and on the greens at present, and having shot some low scores on similar courses, he can hit the front on day one.

Olesen has had three top-10s across his last eight appearances. He finished 3rd in the Nexo Championship back in August, 8th in the Irish Open at the beginning of September, and just two starts ago he was 5th in the Dunhill Links – an event in which he opened with an eight-under 64 at Carnoustie to finish the first round in 4th place.

His most notable first-round display of the season came at Royal Portrush in The Open, where he fired a 4-under 67 to tie the lead. Indeed, few players have been performing as strongly on day one – ranking 5th in this field for first-round performance over the last three months.

Olesen also ranks inside the top 25 in approach and putting over that same period. Having shot several under-par rounds in the Irish and Turkish Airlines Opens – events flagged as potential comps – everything tells me he can find a low one tomorrow morning.

Alejandro Del Rey

Start time: 07:20

The big-hitting Alejandro Del Rey is an aggressive golfer whose game has been consistent lately. He's made improvements with his irons and heading into this event in promising first-round form, he's one to watch on Thursday.

Del Rey got his season off to an excellent start, coasting to victory in the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in January. He hasn't really kicked on from that, but he has made six of his last seven cuts, and he finished 21st in the Dunhill Links two appearances ago.

The Spaniard started that event with a seven-under 65 at St Andrews to sit 7th after the opening round – one of six under-par opening rounds in seven. In the one week where he missed the cut due to a poor start at Wentworth, his scoring power was again on show, as he shot a five-under 67 in round two.

Del Rey has turned a weakness into a strength recently, gaining strokes in two out of three starts in approach. He continues to thrive off the tee, and with an eye-catching record in the correlating Singapore Classic – where his prowess with the driver has taken him to finishes of 3rd, 7th, and 14th in three visits – he's a lively contender in this betting heat.

Seungbin Choi

Start time: 07:30

I'm going to finish with one of the home contingent and arriving here after winning his second KPGA title last week, 24-year-old Seungbin Choi gets the nod. He finished 3rd at this course in the Korea Open in 2023 and as a long hitter who makes plenty of birdies, he's ideal for this market.

Choi is somewhat of an all-or-nothing player. He's missed eight of 14 cuts this season but has also picked up four top-five finishes. Two of those have come back-to-back in his last two starts, as he finished 4th in the Hyundai Insurance KJ Choi Invitational two starts ago, before winning the Charity Classic last week – an event in which he finished with rounds of 65-67-67 after a slow start.

He's a heavy scorer, ranking 4th in birdie-or-better % on the KPGA this season, and he's also in the top 25 in driving distance and putting. He put this explosive scoring power to effective use two starts ago, beginning with a six-under 66 in the Hyundai Insurance to share the first-round lead.

Choi debuted at Woo Jeong Hills in 2023 at the Korea Open and finished 3rd, where he closed with a three-under 68 – the lowest round of the final day and one of only two rounds in the 60s. With his game in great shape and handed a plum draw alongside Si Woo Kim for the opening two rounds, he'll be relishing his return to the course this week.
