Hazy sunshine is forecast to stick around all day, with early-morning temperatures starting at 20°C and rising to 30°C by midday. With wind speeds reaching no higher than 6mph for much of the round, there is unlikely to be any draw bias between the two waves.

With that, we can pick freely across the tee times to find this week’s first-round leader in India.

0.75 pts Darius Van Driel each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 66/1

Start time: 11.30am

Owing to his straight hitting, Darius Van Driel is a player who excels on these tighter, tree-lined tracks. He’s been in great first-round form in recent months and having rediscovered his touch with the irons last week in Spain, he is a lively contender to top the leaderboard on day one.

Van Driel’s runner-up finish in the Soudal Open back in May is his standout result of the season, but he’s currently enjoying his most consistent run of the year, making five of his last six cuts.

The Dutchman ranks 12th in SG: Total over that period and is the third most accurate driver in this field. He also sits inside the top 20 in approach and was particularly good in this area last week, ranking 16th in Madrid.

Van Driel has begun with a round in the 60s in each of his last four outings, including firing a nine-under 63 at Kingsbarns to share the first-round lead at the Dunhill Links two starts ago.

That was his second first-round lead in 10 starts after opening with a five-under 67 in the BMW International Open, and as a player who has won in Kenya, finished 2nd in the Soudal Open and recorded two top-five finishes in the Alfred Dunhill Championship, he can make another fast start at Delhi Golf Club.

0.75 pts Benjamin Hebert each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 125/1

Start time: 8.15am

Benjamin Hebert has produced some solid golf this year but has found his results hampered by the putter. However, he looked to have found something on the greens when narrowly missing the cut in last week’s Open de Espana and if he keeps that rolling, this precise ball-striker could make some early noise in India.

Hebert had a decent start to the year, making the top 20 three times over his first six starts. He’s since missed 12 cuts out of 16, but he did produce his best performance of the year to finish 11th in the Dunhill Links two starts ago – closing with a 65 at St Andrews – and his ability to go low was again on display at the European Masters five starts ago, as he ended with another 65 to finish 28th.

The Frenchman’s long game has been rock-solid all season, ranking 14th in approach and 40th in driving accuracy – an ideal combo for this narrow, classic course. His putting has been the glaring issue, but he gained strokes in each of the first two rounds in Spain – I’m hoping he can carry that momentum into this week.

One of Hebert’s best results of the season came in the Indian Open back in February, finishing 17th, and as a player who has finished 3rd at The Belfry and Leopard Creek, he has the skillset to score well at a course such as this.

0.75 pts Yuvraj Sandhu each-way (1/4 - 5 places) @ 125/1

Start time: 7.55am

To finish, I’ll take a chance on talented home favourite Yuvraj Sandhu. He’s the top-ranked player on the PGTI (Professional Golf Tour of India) thanks to four wins in 2025, and possessing an eye-catching record at Delhi Golf Club, he should relish teeing it up in this esteemed company.

Sandhu began the season with back-to-back wins in India and has recorded a further six top-five finishes, including again winning two on the spin in August. He held the first-round lead in each of these recent victories, opening with a nine-under 61 in the Mysuru Open, and an eight-under 63 in the PGTI Players Championship.

He’s teed it up at the heightened level of the Asian Tour of late and while finishes of 52-24-43 don’t look like much, it represents an improvement on him generally missing cuts on that tour this year.

Sandhu is a strong driver, ranking inside the top 30 on the PGTI in accuracy and distance, and he’s also a handy 2nd in greens-in-regulation. With stats like this, it’s no surprise that he’s got a good record at Delhi Golf Club, finishing 3rd and 4th in PGTI events held here, and he was 6th in the 2022 DGC Open on the Asian Tour.

With rounds of 66 and 67 to his name around this challenging layout, he’s proven himself capable of going low and can delight the home crowd in doing so on Thursday morning.
