The morning wave tees off at 6.45am, when the wind is forecast to blow at a constant 20mph, gusting at highs of 35mph by midday. Although it will remain difficult as the afternoon wave begins at 11.45am, the breeze is set to ease slightly. Also accompanied by a drop in humidity and higher temperatures (35°C as opposed to 20°C in the morning), it’s this section of the draw that looks to have a small advantage.
With that, I’m going to focus all of my attention on the afternoon tee times in my attempt to crack this week’s first-round leader market, and I have selected three players who look well equipped to make a fast start.

1.25 pts Wenyi Ding each-way (1/5 - 5 places) @ 35/1
Start time: 12.35pm
Following a successful stint on the Asian Tour, Wenyi Ding returned to DP World Tour (DPWT) action to finish an impressive 2nd in last week’s Australian PGA Championship. He has extremely positive amateur form at this venue and possessing a tidy short game, he can handle the testing first-round conditions.
Ding’s 2024/25 season on the DPWT offered plenty of promise at the beginning, but fizzled out towards the end, concluding with a missed cut in the Open de Espana. He headed straight to Asia following that, finishing 3rd in the Macao Open and 6th in the Hong Kong Open in consecutive weeks, then looked really sharp at Royal Queensland despite his four-week absence, firing four rounds in the 60s to finish 2nd.
His skills around the greens have been standout this year, ranking 14th in scrambling and 29th in SG: Around-the-Greens (SG: ATG) on the DPWT. He’s also among the strongest first-round performers in this field, ranking 13th for the season. This has been on display in recent starts, opening with a seven-under 63 to tie the first-round lead in Macao, whilst a four-under 67 saw him sit 5th after round one last week.
Ding played at Royal Melbourne in the 2023 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, finishing 2nd. He carried that Sandbelt form into the Australian Open last year with a 5th-place finish and currently performing better than at any point in 2025, he can make those experiences count on day one.

1 pt Kazuma Kobori each-way (1/5 - 5 places) @ 50/1
Start time: 12.45pm
Kazuma Kobori arrives here after holding the halfway lead last week before a disappointing final round saw him slip to 25th. However, he’s a precise ball-striker with a steady short game, and with this diminutive New Zealander unsurprisingly strong in the wind, he can bounce back in the opening round at Royal Melbourne.
Kobori made it all the way to the DP World Tour Championship in his rookie season, largely thanks to contending efforts of 2nd in the British Masters and 3rd in the BMW International Open. He appeared likely to make a positive start to the new season in Queensland, with a superb eight-under 63 in round two handing him the 36-hole advantage prior to his day-four struggles.
He hit more fairways than anyone there and combined it with a stellar short-game display, ranking 5th in SG: Putting, 15th in SG: ATG, and 17th in scrambling. This is reminiscent of his season-long stats, ranking 2nd in driving accuracy and inside the top 50 with each part of his short game – a skillset that should serve him well here.
Kobori finished 6th, just a few places behind Wenyi Ding, in that 2023 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. That familiarity with this challenging layout will be a major help this week and, in fine first-round form – having shot an eight-under 64 to share the first-round lead in Abu Dhabi three starts ago – expect to find him among the leaders on day one.

0.75 pts Jack Senior each-way (1/5 - 5 places) @ 90/1
Start time: 11.45am
Given he produced his best performance of the year in windy conditions at the KLM Open, I’m going to take a punt on Englishman Jack Senior. He has experience of Royal Melbourne from the 2011 Australian Masters of the Amateurs, and if able to match last week’s short-game performance with his typically straight hitting, he could go well in round one.
Senior finished 4th in the KLM Open and it’s worth noting that in round two – the most challenging and windy of the four days – he shot the joint-lowest score of 68. Further to that, his second-best result of the year again came in the wind, when finishing 13th in the brutally difficult Nexo Championship.
He’s been driving the ball straight all season, ranking 19th in driving accuracy, whilst his approach play and putting has also been at a solid level, ranking 50th and 57th respectively. It is a small concern that he has struggled around the greens, but he did show a decent touch last week, ranking 22nd in scrambling and 25th in SG: ATG.
I’m hoping that Senior can keep that going for one more round at the admittedly more demanding Royal Melbourne – a course at which he finished a promising 14th in that 2011 Masters of the Amateurs.
