It’s now time to close out the European Swing stage of the season in Germany, as an exciting field descends on Golfclub München Eichenried for the BMW International Open.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY

The BMW International Open made its debut on the DP World Tour in 1989 and excluding 2020, it has been held every year since. Each edition has taken place in Germany, with Golfclub München Eichenried the most regular host course, staging 28 of the 35 renewals and exclusively so since 2019.

There is a small group of just four players who have won multiple BMW International Open titles. Paul Azinger was the first to achieve the feat, recording victories in 1990 and 1992, and he has since been followed by Thomas Bjorn (2000, 2002), Pablo Larrazabal (2011, 2015) and Henrik Stenson (2006, 2016).

We’ve also seen several other stars lift the trophy, such as Sandy Lyle (1991), Colin Montgomerie (1999), Lee Westwood (2003), Miguel Angel Jimenez (2004) and Ernie Els (2013).

Martin Kaymer is the only German winner of the event, delighting the home crowd with a playoff win over Denmark’s Anders Hansen in 2008.

Last five winners:

  • 2024

Winner: Ewen Ferguson (-18)

Runners-up: David Micheluzzi, Jordan Smith (-16)

  • 2023

Winner: Thriston Lawrence (-13)

Runner-up: Joost Luiten (-12)

  • 2022

Winner: Haotong Li (-22, playoff)

Runner-up: Thomas Pieters (-22)

  • 2021

Winner: Viktor Hovland (-19)

Runner-up: Martin Kaymer (-17)

  • 2019

Winner: Andrea Pavan (-15, playoff)

Runner-up: Matt Fitzpatrick (-15)

Ewen Ferguson produced an impressive display to win his third DPWT title in this event last season, taking the lead in round two due to a superb eight-under 64 and remaining there after rounds three and four. He returns this week, looking to become the first player to successfully defend the BMW International Open.

THE COURSE

Golfclub München Eichenried opened in 1989 and was designed by German architect Kurt Rossknecht. It has undergone several small changes in the following years, most recently completing a full renovation of its greens in 2018.

This par-72 course measures 7354yds and possesses 4x par 3s (162-227yds), 10x par 4s (319-490yds) and 4x par 5s (546-575yds). It provides a solid all-round test, but the scoring is usually good if the weather doesn’t have an impact, averaging a winning score of -17.3 across the last 10 renewals of the event here.

Golfclub München Eichenried is a fun and fair parkland course that offers birdie chances throughout, and features an element of risk/reward, with water in-play on seven holes. It is tree-lined yet spacious and whilst nothing is too difficult, nor is it too easy. Play quality golf and you’ll be rewarded; stray with the long game and you can quickly rack up some big numbers.

The fairways are around average in width; some are narrow, and others are generous. Strategic bunkering offers the primary protection, and some thick rough for those that are too wayward with driver. Meanwhile, this week’s competitors will find approaches into the greens blocked out by trees if they end up on the wrong side.

Said greens are bentgrass and reasonably large, and whilst the undulations aren’t especially harsh, several are multi-tiered and have moderate slopes. They are well-bunkered and littered with run-offs, which often lead into collection areas that can be tricky to get up and down from.

The finish at Golfclub München Eichenried is exciting, with water in-play on each of the final three holes. It sits short and left of the drivable 319yd par-4 16th, guards the front of the 212yd par-3 17th, and protects the left-hand side of the fairway and right-hand side of the green on the closing 575yd par-5 18th – all of which can lead to plenty of drama down the stretch on Sunday.

THE WEATHER

Conditions are forecast to be hot and humid, with thunderstorms predicted in the opening three rounds before clearing up on the final day. If those rains arrive, and with little wind on the cards, this typically soft and receptive course should be susceptible to low scores.

KEY STATS

  • SG: Approach
  • Greens-in-Regulation

The long game has to be in good shape to contend at Golfclub München Eichenried, with top-class iron play proving especially important in this event in recent renewals.

Ewen Ferguson struck his irons superbly last year, ranking 2nd in approach, and he was also 7th in greens-in-regulation (GIR). Consistently elite ball-striker Jordan Smith finished 2nd to Ferguson, ranking 9th in GIR and 15th in approach in the process.

Thriston Lawrence ranked 8th in approach when he won this title in 2023. His nearest challenger, Joost Luiten, ranked 5th in approach and 2nd in GIR.

The 2022 champion, Haotong Li, was a strong 10th in approach, and 2021 winner, Viktor Hovland, ranked 8th in GIR and 19th in approach.

  • SG: Off-the-Tee and/or Driving Accuracy

The driver is another key asset, and it has become ever more valuable to keep it in the fairways in recent renewals.

Ewen Ferguson was a solid a solid 31st off-the-tee (OTT) in 2024 and found plenty of fairways, ranking 8th in driving accuracy. The two runners-up each drove the ball well, with David Micheluzzi ranking 4th in driving accuracy and 13th OTT, and Jordan Smith ranking 16th in driving accuracy and 16th OTT.

Thriston Lawrence excelled in other areas in 2023, but runner-up, Joost Luiten, ranked an impressive 4th OTT and 9th in driving accuracy.

In addition, both 2022 and 2021 winners, Haotong Li and Viktor Hovland, ranked inside the top 20 OTT.

  • SG: Putting (bentgrass)
  • Par 5 Scoring

Each of the last four winners at this course have mastered these bentgrass greens on their way to victory, with none ranking worse than 11th in putting for the week. In addition, the par 5s are all reachable in two for most of the field, and it is vital that players score heavily on these holes.

CORRELATING EVENTS (COURSES)

British Masters (The Belfry – Brabazon Course)

The Belfry’s Brabazon Course is a flat, tree-lined layout, with doglegging fairways and greens of a similar level of difficulty. It plays to an almost identical par and yardage as Golfclub München Eichenried, and ranking closely in almost every aspect, it was the standout comp this week.

Omega European Masters (Crans-sur-Sierre)

Although Crans-sur-Sierre is a much hillier venue than Golfclub München Eichenried, with its tree-lined, doglegging fairways, bentgrass-dominant greens, and prevalence of risk/reward holes, they still have much in common. The ball-striking stats also compare closely, which has led to plenty of crossover form between these two courses.

Qatar Masters (Doha Golf Club)

The exposed nature of Doha Golf Club wouldn’t appear the most obvious comp course for this week’s challenge, but there was more correlating form to be found here than at any other course. It does rank similarly to Golfclub München Eichenried in driving accuracy and greens-in-regulation averages, and it’s another event where strong approach play often separates the contenders.

Ewen Ferguson:

THE FIELD

Patrick Reed is the highest-ranking player in this week’s field at No. 57, and he is joined by a further five of the world’s top 100: Laurie Canter (No. 70), Matti Schmid (No. 84), Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen (No. 87), Shaun Norris (No. 94) and Kristoffer Reitan (No. 100).

Ewen Ferguson returns as the defending champion. The Scot is one of seven former winners in attendance, alongside Haotong Li (2022), Andrea Pavan (2019), Pablo Larrazabal (2015, 2011), Fabrizio Zanotti (2014), David Horsey (2010) and Martin Kaymer (2008).

Sergio Garcia makes his first DP World Tour start since 2022; fellow Spaniard’s and LIV golfers David Puig and Jose Luis Ballester will also tee it up; and there is a place for Japan’s former No. 1 amateur Taiga Semikawa among the tournament invites.

SELECTIONS

Market leaders (1/4 5 places): Patrick Reed 12/1, David Puig 16/1, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen 18/1, Jordan Smith 22/1, Sergio Garcia 25/1, Haotong Li 25/1

1.75 pts Eugenio Chacarra each-way (1/5 - 8 places) @ 28/1

Eugenio Chacarra is having a terrific first full season on the DP World Tour and has returned to form in approach in recent starts. He has a quality long game and displays consistent strength on the greens, which should help him contend on his debut at Golfclub München Eichenried.

Chacarra has reaped the rewards from his split with LIV this year, breaking through on the DPWT in just his second start of the season, winning the Indian Open. He hasn’t missed a cut on the tour across his eight starts and has recorded two further top-10s, which came courtesy of a 4th-place finish in China, and he was 7th in last week’s Italian Open.

He's been exceptional in approach this season, ranking 2nd and he arrives here after his strongest driving performance of the year, leading the field off-the-tee in Italy. He often complements this high level of ball-striking with quality on the greens, ranking 18th in putting in 2025.

Chacarra has zero course form and little comp form from the courses mentioned above, though his win in India could work, with players such as Pablo Larrazabal, Joost Luiten, and Matt Wallace transferring form between that event and this. Furthermore, he has extra motivation to perform here, with three members of his former team on LIV (Fireballs) – Sergio Garcia, David Puig, and Jose Luis Ballester – all teeing it up this week.

BMW International Open 2025 - Each-way (1/5 - 8 Places) Eugenio Chacarra

1.25 pts Kristoffer Reitan each-way (1/5 - 8 places) @ 40/1

Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan has established himself as one of the best drivers on the DPWT upon his return this season. He earned his first win at this level in the Soudal Open four starts ago due to a sensational final round, and retaining his form since, I expect another contending performance in Germany.

Reitan has shown promise throughout the season, but his form has hit new heights in the last two months. He hasn’t missed a cut in his last eight starts and aside from that victory in Belgium – where he shot a final-round 62 to make up a nine-shot deficit – he has recorded 2nd-place finishes in the Hainan Classic and Austrian Alpine Open.

He’s excelling with the driver, combining power and accuracy to rank 17th in 2025. The putter has also impressed of late, ranking 4th in this field over the last three months, and coming here after an improved approach display in Italy last week, ranking 10th, he ticks every box statistically.

Reitan has played here once before, missing the cut in his rookie season all the way back in 2019. He’s a much different prospect now and with that victory in the Soudal Open acting as an encouraging piece of comp form, I’m confident he has the game to challenge in Munich.

BMW International Open 2025 - Each-way (1/5 - 8 Places) Kristoffer Reitan

Odds correct at time of publishing.

1 pt Andy Sullivan each-way (1/5 - 8 places) @ 55/1

Consistency has been the name of the game for Andy Sullivan this season, missing just three cuts in 16 starts. He’s gaining strokes right through the bag and having recorded some positive performances at this venue, he can claim his fifth DPWT victory this week.

Sullivan has secured six top-25 finishes over those 16 starts and four have come in the last two months. He finished 23rd in the Hainan Classic at the end of April and after missing the cut in Turkey, he reeled off three consecutive top-20s: 11th in the Soudal Open, 17th in the Austrian Alpine Open, and 7th in the KLM Open. Before producing another solid performance to finish 33rd in last week’s Italian Open.

The Englishman has been hitting the ball with precision, ranking 37th in driving accuracy and 39th in approach. Meanwhile, his putting has improved recently, ranking 17th in this field over the previous three months.

Sullivan has played here on seven occasions, delivering a mixed bag of results, missing four cuts. However, he was an impressive 5th in 2021 and possessing several top-15 finishes across starts at The Belfry and Rinkven International, his comp form offers added encouragement.

BMW International Open 2025 - Each-way (1/5 - 8 Places) Andy Sullivan

Odds correct at time of publishing.

1 pt Daniel Hillier each-way (1/5 - 8 places) @ 60/1

Speaking of consistency, Daniel Hillier has only two missed cuts to his name this season. The main story of his campaign has been the major gains he’s made with the putter, and with his usually high-level approach play returning in recent starts, the New Zealander is playing well enough to go two better than his 3rd-place finish at Golfclub München Eichenried in 2023.

Hillier almost got the year off to the best possible start, finishing as a narrow runner-up to Tyrrell Hatton in the Dubai Desert Classic. He did miss the cut in Ras Al Khaimah following that, but has only missed one of his last 11, and he recorded a second top-10 finish of the year when 9th in the Hainan Classic five starts ago.

His long game has been the key to his success since turning pro, and it has again been vital this season, ranking 19th in approach, 35th in greens-in-regulation and 41st off-the-tee. Indeed, his irons looked particularly good last week, as he ranked 6th in approach on his way to a 41st-place finish in Italy. However, by far the most promising aspect of his performances this season has been the putter – a club with which he ranks 23rd this season, as opposed to being outside the top 110 in the previous two seasons.

Hillier was the halfway leader in this event on debut in 2023, before eventually settling for an admirable 3rd-place finish. Although he missed the cut on his return last year, his win at The Belfry in the British Masters – also in 2023 – is further indication of how well suited he is to this course.

BMW International Open 2025 - Each-way (1/5 - 8 Places) Daniel Hillier

Odds correct at time of publishing.

1 pt Dan Bradbury each-way (1/5 - 8 places) @ 60/1

Off the back of his two best performances of the season – where his approach play has really come to the fore – the precise ball-striking talents of Dan Bradbury made a lot of sense in Germany this week.

The Englishman made an inauspicious start to the year, missing seven of his first 10 cuts and recording just one finish inside the top 50. However, he found form in the KLM Open two starts ago, finishing 7th and he backed that up with an even better performance in last week’s Italian Open, finishing 3rd.

Despite his previously poor results, his long game has still looked in good shape this season, ranking 14th in greens-in-regulation and 29th off-the-tee. He had been lacking precision in approach, but he’s upgraded his efforts in that regarded in those last two starts, ranking 8th in the KLM Open and 9th in Italy.

Additionally, his putting performance last week, ranking 12th, was a considerable improvement on recent efforts. He’s a player who often struggles with the club but tends to stay hot for a few events when he finds it. Something he showed when winning in France last year.

Bradbury was a respectable 43rd on his BMW International Open in 2023, where, encouragingly, the course appeared to suit his eye from a ball-striking perspective. Further promise can be found in top-10 finishes at the British Masters and Soudal Open in the last couple of seasons.

BMW International Open 2025 - Each-way (1/5 - 8 Places) Dan Bradbury

Odds correct at time of publishing.

1 pt Bernd Wiesberger each-way (1/5 - 8 places) @ 110/1

I’m going to take a punt on eight-time DPWT winner Bernd Wiesberger as my final selection. There are few players as effective with their irons currently, and having twice finished inside the top five here, he looks great value to return to the winner’s circle.

Wiesberger took a little time to get going this season, but he has looked much better since the end of April. He hasn’t missed a cut in his last six starts and has recorded two top-25s in that time, finishing 11th in the Hainan Classic and 25th in the Soudal Open.

The driver and putter continue to be of concern, though I’m happy to overlook that due to the standard of his approach play. He ranks 4th in this field over the last three months and just two starts ago in the KLM Open, he produced his best approach performance since returning to the DPWT at the beginning of 2024.

Wiesberger has made five appearances at Golfclub München Eichenried and has never missed the cut, recording five top-20 finishes. He hit the top five in 2013 and 2021, and having also achieved finishes of 2nd at Crans, 3rd in Qatar, and 5th at The Belfry, this is clearly the type of venue where his game can shine.

BMW International Open 2025 - Each-way (1/5 - 8 Places) Bernd Wiesberger
