After a 2025 campaign spanning 27 events across five continents, the Ladies European Tour season draws to a close this week in Malaga, with the Andalucia Costa del Sol Open de Espana at Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY

The Andalucia Costa del Sol Open de Espana was first held in 1982, though it only became an official Ladies European Tour (LET) event in 2002. It has held this spot as the season finale since 2020.

Azahara Munoz was the first Spanish winner in 2016, and she successfully defended her title the next year. She was followed by Anne Van Dam, who also recorded back-to-back victories in 2018 and 2019, and the event had its third two-time winner of the LET era in 2024, as Carlota Ciganda reclaimed the title she first won in 2021.

Last five winners:

  • 2024 (Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf)

Winner: Carlota Ciganda (-18)

Runner-up: Manon De Roey (-17)

  • 2023 (Real Club de Golf Las Brisas)

Winner: Aditi Ashok (-17)

Runner-up: Anne Van Dam (-15)

  • 2022 (Villa Padierna Golf Club)

Winner: Caroline Hedwall (-18, playoff)

Runner-up: Morgane Metraux (-18)

  • 2021 (Los Naranjos Golf Club)

Winner: Carlota Ciganda (-11)

Runner-up: Maja Stark (-7)

  • 2020 (Real Club de Golf Guadalmina)

Winner: Emily Kristine Pedersen (-15)

Runner-up: Nuria Iturrioz (-11)

Ciganda's win was the eighth of her career on the LET, and she returns to defend having won her third LPGA title earlier in the year at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Widely regarded as the greatest Spanish female golfer of all time, it would be apt if she were to become the most successful player in the history of her national open this week.

THE COURSE

Making its debut as host of this event last year, Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf is back again in 2025. Originally designed by Finnish architect Kosti Kuronen in 1987, the course was redesigned by fan-favourite Miguel Angel Jimenez in 2007, who regularly practices here. Aside from this event, it also hosted the Spanish Ladies Amateur in 2024.

The course has been shortened slightly this year, with this par 72 now measuring 6379 yards. It contains 4x par 3s (128-160 yards), 10x par 4s (329-407 yards), and 4x par 5s (469-541 yards).

The two nines are rather contrasting. Whereas the first half of the course guides players through narrow corridors on hilly, tree-lined terrain, the back nine is much flatter and more open, with wide fairways and water in play on five holes.

Generally small and narrow or shallow in shape, the firm, fast greens can be tricky to hit. They're often elevated and reasonably undulating; as are their surrounds, with run-off areas and bunkers protecting many.

Despite the small greens and some tighter driving holes on the front nine, the layout remains scoreable. There is little rough or especially strategic bunkering to punish wayward ball-striking, and along with four par 5s that should be reachable in two for most, a strong drive and a wedge can set up birdie chances on the many shorter par 4s.

Carlota Ciganda scored well on the course to win last year, shooting an 18-under-par winning total, and with similarly pleasant weather on the way this week, we can expect more birdies in Malaga.

THE WEATHER

The players couldn't ask for better conditions in the final event of the season. It is forecast to be bright and warm throughout the week, with temperatures reaching 20°C each day.

Although it's scheduled to be a touch breezier on Sunday, when we could see constant wind speeds of 12mph, it's predicted to blow at a gentle 4-7mph over the opening three rounds.

KEY STATS

  • SG: Off-the-Tee/Driving Distance
  • SG: Approach/Greens-in-Regulation
  • Birdie Average

Due to the lack of punishment for missing the fairways at Real Guadalhorce, I felt that strong, lengthy drivers could go well last year and that certainly seemed to transpire.

2025 winner Carlota Ciganda is a great driver and has ranked towards the top of the driving distance category on the LPGA for much of her career, including placing 26th this year.

Runner-up Manon De Roey ticks the same box, ranking inside the top 20 regular LET players in driving distance last season. Other top-five finishers, Helen Briem (4th) and Patricia Schmidt (5th), support this, ranking 1st and 3rd in driving distance in 2024.

The small, tricky greens do of course require high-quality iron play and with so many scoring opportunities, we can also look at players who rank high in birdie average.

CORRELATING EVENTS (COURSES)

Whilst we have only had one event staged at Real Guadalhorce, some notable links to other events did develop last year.

Ladies Open de France (Golf Barriere Deauville)

The most striking of these is the Ladies Open de France, which has been held at Golf Barriere Deauville since 2022.

Notable correlating form:

Manon De Roey:

Open de Espana (2nd) / Open de France (3rd)

Pranavi Urs:

Open de Espana (3rd) / Open de France (5th)

Helen Briem:

Open de Espana (4th) / Open de France (2nd)

Dormy/Helsingborg Open (Allerum Golf Club)

The 2024 Dormy Open and 2023 Helsingborg Open host Allerum Golf Club is also worth checking out.

Notable correlating form:

Manon De Roey:

Open de Espana (2nd) / Dormy Open (8th)

Pranavi Urs:

Open de Espana (3rd) / Dormy Open (3rd)

Helen Briem:

Open de Espana (4th) / Dormy Open (2nd)

Patricia Schmidt:

Open de Espana (5th) / Dormy Open (10th)

THE FIELD

Unsurprisingly, defending champion Carlota Ciganda is the top-ranked player in this week's field at No. 34. She's one of two players from inside the top 100, alongside No. 81 Mimi Rhodes and No. 84 Helen Briem.

Ciganda is joined by a further three former winners: Aditi Ashok (2023), Azahara Munoz (2017, 2016), and Lee-Anne Pace (2013).

The leading player on the 2025 Order of Merit, Shannon Tan, will tee it up. In addition, we will also get a good look at some potential stars of the future, as the No. 2 and No. 3 amateurs in the world, Paula Martin Sampedro and Andrea Revuelta, compete on home soil.

SELECTIONS

Market leaders: Carlota Ciganda 15/2, Mimi Rhode 10/1, Paula Martin Sampedro 10/1, Shannon Tan 11/1, Andrea Revuelta 12/1, Helen Briem 16/1

Helen Briem

Although she's not managed to add another title to the five she picked up in 2024, it has still been a productive season for Helen Briem. She's been striking her irons superbly in recent starts and having finished 4th here last year, this lengthy hitter looks a major player in Malaga.

It didn't take the imposing German long to get going in 2025, finishing 3rd in the Joburg Ladies Open on her third appearance. She then recorded two runner-up finishes over her next six starts – coming in the Tenerife Open and German Masters – and after an underwhelming run of results she once again went close in France three starts ago, again finishing 2nd.

Her approach play impressed there, ranking 4th and these qualities were on show on her most recent start in the Aramco China Championship, where she ranked 1st. She ranks 3rd in greens-in-regulation (GIR) season-long, 19th in birdie average, and among the longest players on tour, she's an ideal fit for Real Guadalhorce.

Briem proved this last year, finishing 4th – an event in which she went off as a considerably shorter 6/1 shot. She recorded her first LET win in Spain in last year's La Sella Open, and possessing a victory in the prestigious Copa Sotogrande during her hugely successful amateur career, this is a part of the world that brings out the best in her.

Perrine Delacour

Perrine Delacour has won a title at this level in each of the last two seasons, during which time she's continued to mix her schedule between the LET and LPGA. Her long game has looked in great shape of late and having won at the correlating Dormy Open last year, she appears well equipped to take to this course on debut.

Delacour was slow out of the blocks this year, but she left that form behind when winning the South African Women's Open back in April. She hasn't missed a cut on the LET since then and has hit the top 15 in six of her last eight starts on the tour. This includes recording further top-five finishes in the Aramco Korea Championship, Czech Ladies Open, and Aramco Houston Championship.

She was 13th in the Aramco China Championship when we last saw her on this circuit three weeks ago, gaining strokes in SG: Approach and SG: Off-the-Tee (SG: OTT). With rankings of 30th in GIR and 35th in driving distance, she should create numerous chances around this layout.

Delacour didn't play this event last year, but she beat several of the top performers at Real Guadalhorce when claiming that victory in the Dormy Open. As a two-time tour winner who has acquitted herself adequately at the higher level of the LPGA, she represents value in this field.

Moa Folke

Moa Folke has been solid in 2025 without ever quite looking like shedding her LET maiden tag. However, she arrives here after just her second top-10 of the season in China, and having shown promise in Spain last year, this is a terrific opportunity for her to enter the winner's circle.

Folke has only missed five cuts in 22 starts this season, picking up nine top-25 finishes. Her standout result came in the Women's NSW Open back in March, finishing 5th, and she doubled her top-10 tally three weeks ago, finishing 8th in the Aramco China Championship.

She has been hitting her irons strongly for several weeks now and it was her approach play that engineered that result in China, ranking 6th. She's also 25th in putting average, 26th in driving distance, and sitting 31st in birdie average, her stats strengthen her case.

Folke was 22nd at Real Guadalhorce last year, firing three rounds under par. That offers encouragement alone, but when combined with her joint-best LET finish coming in the 2023 Open de France, where she finished 2nd, I'm convinced she's capable of an improved result this time around.

Smilla Tarning Soenderby

Smilla Soenderby is without a top-10 finish since her second start of the season. That said, performances have been extremely promising lately, and as both a decent statistical match and possessing some handy comp form, I fancy her to finish the year in style.

The Dane has hit the top 25 in eight of her 18 LET starts in 2025, going best when 10th in the Australian Women's Classic. Her results have been inconsistent for much of the year but that has not been the case in recent months, missing just one cut in five starts and recording three top-25s.

Her long game has been sound over her latest starts and she's particularly excelling with the driver, ranking 1st in SG: OTT in China when we last saw her. She's inside the top 50 in driving distance and ranked at 26th in birdie average, she has the scoring power required to tackle this setup.

Soenderby didn't play here last year, but having finished 3rd in the 2023 Dormy Open at Allerum Golf Club, I'm optimistic that she'll enjoy what she finds at Real Guadalhorce.
