World Grand Prix 2023 Betting Tips
History, Location and Format
The 2023 World Grand Prix is the 26th running of the event and is held at the Morningside Arena in Leicester, between the 2nd and 8th October.
The tournament has been held at several venues since it’s inception in 1998 but for a long time, it’s traditional home was the CityWest Hotel in Dublin. However, COVID changed all that and has been held in Leicester since 2021.
There have been just three multiple winners of this title, with Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor a record 11-time champion, Michael van Gerwen (six) and James Wade a two-time champ.
The defending champion is Van Gerwen, who defeated Nathan Aspinall 5-3 in the 2022 final, to pick up his sixth title.
The format of the World Grand Prix is an unusual one, requiring a double-start as well as a double-finish, or alternatively the bullseye and is the only televised tournament to do so.
This format also makes the prospect of a 9-darter a lot more difficult to achieve and there have only ever been three in the tournament – the first one memorably made by ‘The History-Maker’ Brendan Dolan.
There are 32 players taking part in the event, with the top 16 in the PDC Order of Merit joined by the top 16 from the ProTour Order of Merit who hadn’t already qualified. The top eight from the order of merit are automatically seeded for the draw.
The first round matches are played as a best-of 3 sets, the second round and quarters a best-of 5, semi-finals a best-of 7 and the final a best-of 9 sets.

Gerwyn Price to win – 4/1
‘The Iceman’ has an excellent record here in recent years, winning the tournament in 2020, before a loss to Jonny Clayton in the final a year later and a semi-final exit last year.
The double-in, double-out format suits Price perfectly, as he is so strong on double-top and can quite easily get off the mark.
The Welshman performed pretty well in Hungary last week, before running into an inspired Luke Humphries in the semi-finals, so is clearly in good nick.
I like his chances of picking up his second Grand Prix title this week.
Dave Chisnall Each-way (1/2, 2 Places) – 16/1
Currently the man-of-the-moment in the darting world, Dave Chisnall has had a stellar couple of weeks on the oche.
‘Chizzy’ picked up the Hungarian Darts Trophy last week before picking up the Players Championship 23 title in Barnsley, beating the unfortunate Luke Humphries on both occasions.
The 43-year-old is seen as the nearly man of darts, losing a BDO World Championships, as well as the six major finals he has reached in the PDC.
However, Chisnall looks in a serious groove right now and if his double starting is ok here, he could go all the way.
After a first round match-up against Luke Woodhouse, another Luke in his recent sparring partner, Humphries awaits…
