Nathan Aspinall to beat Michael van Gerwen @ 1/1

The top four of the table will be confirmed at the conclusion of this match and for a second week running it’s the headline match of the evening.

Nathan now holds the massive upper hand, having came out on top last week when the two met in the quarter finals in Aberdeen, before following that up with a pair of dominant 6-1 wins over Bunting and Dobey to notch up his second nightly win of this Premier League campaign. That victory has seen The Asp leapfrog MVG in the table into fourth and he now holds a strong four point lead over the Dutchman.

This means the only scenario that would see Van Gerwen making Finals Night next week would be by winning the night in Sheffield. A big ask you’d think, considering he’s one of only two players who have failed to win a night in the 15 weeks of action so far.

Aspinall was always in control of their match last Thursday, having never trailed at any stage. That now makes it four Aspinall wins in his last five meetings against MVG, a record he should be proud of and one that makes him being slight outsider all the more baffling.

Has MVG got the belief or fight in himself at the moment to turn this round? Personally I’d say more likely not, based on what we’ve seen from Mighty Mike this year, with a Euro Tour win papering over the cracks you could argue.

Aspinall has the added advantage of knowing one win is enough, so can put all his energy into this match, knowing any matches following wouldn’t have much riding on them. Van Gerwen would need to reserve some energy for a further two must-win matches.

From what we saw last week, I can’t figure out why Aspinall is still evens and I reckon he prevents the great escape from MVG early doors.

Rob Cross +2.5 legs handicap vs Luke Humphries @ 1/2

Nowhere near as much to say on this one, given there’s not a great deal on the line in this one - Cross has tailed off towards the end of this Premier League campaign, already blowing any hopes of climbing into the top four of the table. Humphries has already secured second place, so knows he awaits a semi-final tie against Aspinall or van Gerwen in London next week. We could perhaps see him experiment with equipment as he searches for perfection ahead of Finals Night.

I’m keen on the generous odds of Cross to make a good fist of this match, given his rather impressive record over Humphries - since April of last year, Voltage has won six of his last nine meetings against Humphries, picking up 4+ legs in five of the last six. He clearly feels comfortable playing the World number one and I’m sure he’d like to avoid finishing bottom of the pile, possibly even bid to win his first and only night of the Premier League this year.

Humphries likely has one eye on next week already and probably won’t get much backing from a Sheffield crowd, so may not be at his best in this one. I fancy Cross to end a disappointing campaign on a high and either win or go very close to it here.

The two selections have been generously boosted by the Betfred traders from 2/1 all the way out to 5/2, which you can load straight to your slip by clicking below!
