Quarter 1

0.5 units Wesley Plaisier to win Quarter 1 @ 50/1

Lets starts with a bit of a rogue pick, given the company he’s got in this section of the draw. But I was drawn in by the odds for the big Dutchman - this is a player who made three Pro Tour finals this year, without even owning a tour card. It was third time lucky, as he defeated Josh Rock for his maiden PDC ranking title in October - he averaged 100+ in four of his seven matches on that run, so it was clearly no fluke.

He also won two Challenge Tour events this year and has won the last two editions of the WDF World Masters, so this is a guy with some winning mentality. He does have a very inviting mini section that would see him into the last 32 if he comes out on top in it - he should beat Japanese player Azemoto in the last 96, which would lead to a clash against without doubt the weakest seed in the draw Peter Wright, given how bad his recent form is. If he makes the last 32 then he’ll likely face James Wade or Jermaine Wattimena, which are both winnable games.

He enjoyed some breakthrough success on the Euro Tour in 2022 and 2023, so you could definitely argue he prefers the big stages and crowds. He’s also not too far off breaking into the top 64, which would see him secure a tour card, so there’s plenty in this for big Wes and it’s a massive opportunity for him.

He has gears and if he can find them he’ll be a handful for anyone.

Quarter 2

1 unit Nathan Aspinall to win Quarter 2 @ 12/1

I feel like I always back Nath in some form at the Ally Pally, given I’ve had some great success on him here in the past. This could be a bit of a comeback tournament for Asp though, as he looks to rediscover his best form following numerous issues regarding injury and dartitis.

He’s since had surgery on his elbow to overcome an ongoing injury problem, so he’s finally playing pain free which hasn’t always been the case. He looked to be struggling with a bit of dartitis this year, which he’s since admitted to be the case. In a recent interview he said he’s been working with a psychiatrist and psychologist to work on all matters in the game including the dartitis and says he is feeling the difference. He’s certainly taking all the right steps away from the oche to get back to his best and his preparation couldn’t have been more thought out for this.

In my opinion, he has a decent draw against Cameron Menzies or Leonard Gates, it should be Menzies who he faces, who still lacks the self-belief and composure on the big stages if you ask me and I’d definitely make Aspinall favourite.

Then would probably face Martin Lukeman or Andrew Gilding, again very winnable. If he can play his way into form then he could be a threat in this section, he’s made back-to-back semis in his first two appearances at the Ally Pally, so has shown he can do it before. This tournament can be used as a catalyst to start going up the right way in the rankings again.

Quarter 3

1 unit Chris Dobey to win Quarter 3 @ 11/2

This was by far the hardest quarter of the draw to predict for me - there are many, many capable players but all of a similar level and all come with a negative or two. Eventually I pinned it down to Chris Dobey and Jonny Clayton but this could throw up anything, which is why I haven’t backed either of them to win the tournament itself.

I couldn’t get away from Dobey in the end who consistently seems to get through his first couple matches at this tournament - Hollywood has made the last 16 or better in five of his last six WC appearances, reaching the QFs in his last two. He really should have made the semis last year, but suffered a devastating 5-4 loss to Rob Cross, having led 4-0 himself. This could be the time he goes one step further, he has a favourable opener against Alexander Merkx or Stephen Burton, which could set up a tasty clash with Josh Rock in the last 32. I feel Dobey just has that bit more experience than Rocky and other contenders in this section which could prove the difference.

Hollywood hasn’t exactly hit the heights in the major events this year but has had a cracking time of it on the Pro Tour, making five finals and winning three of them, so the high level play is still in his locker. As I say, experience could be the only difference here, so Dobey is my first pick for this quarter at 11/2.

1 unit Jonny Clayton to win Quarter 3 @ 8/1

It hasn’t been the best of years for Jonny but I’m convinced he’s going to have a burst of form in a big event soon. He has shown glimpses - winning a Pro Tour title earlier in the year and making a Euro Tour final. He’s posted a few nice averages of late and if he can find his better stuff he has a real chance.

His section really is wide open - Wessel Nijman is probably the most favoured and backed but I’m still yet to see any evidence that he can put it all together and go on a run in a major event, which was a massive negative for me and I think he’s too short in the market now regardless. Gerwyn Price is the biggest name but has been shy of any form for a while now, with his mind elsewhere at times it seems.

He faces Mickey Mansell/Tomoyo Goto in the opening match, which won’t be a walk in the park for Jonny but if he can hammer in his classic two treble visits and pin that double 16/8 area with regular occurrence then he can possibly go far.

The Ferret has reached the  last 16 or better in his last three World appearances, he has more experience and levels than the majority of this quarter and looks decent value at 8/1, so will be my second pick in this section.

Quarter 4

3 units Gary Anderson to win Quarter 4 @ 2/1

I've spoken in great depth about Ando's chances in my outright preview but another appealing factor is the half of the draw he’s in - MVG is the main threat in his quarter but I think Michael’s throw/action/stance is all a bit up in the air at the moment and it means he doesn’t have any real consistency, even within a single match at times.

Anderson beat him at the Grand Slam last month, albeit over a short format but I think he’s got his number for just now. Outside of van Gerwen, other big seeds include Ross Smith, Dave Chisnall, Dimitri Van den Bergh etc but all of these guys have had their struggles of late and don’t have the same aura about them as Anderson.

1 unit Dimitri Van den Bergh to win Quarter 4 @ 11/1

I’m probably one of the only punters on the planet to back Dimi in some sense at each of the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and Grand Slam this year, so I may as well add the World Championship to that list.

In all seriousness though, I feel he’s constantly overpriced and overlooked for a player that won a major as recently as March this year and has won more than one. Forget about the floor form and recent form etc, it seems to be fairly irrelevant when it comes to the Belgian as he will just pop out of the blue to win or go on a deep run.

Ando looks the clear winner of this quarter but I reckon Dimi is the best back-up option - he made the semis in 2023 and QFs in 2018 and 2020 show he can be consistent here. The three other seeds in his mini section haven’t won a major between them - Chizzy has recently suffered with back problems which resulted in some atrocious performances from him at the Grand Slam. Gabriel Clemens has had a very quiet year and Martin Schindler has still yet to quite put it all together in a major.

Dimitri is the most proven winner outside of Ando/MVG in this quarter, The Dream Maker could well cause a stir at brilliant odds of 11/1.
