1.5 units Jonny Clayton @ 12/1

Clayton got the nod to be included in this field and you’d have to say in recent months he’s definitely justified that decision by PDC.

The Ferret started a rich vein of form when he won a Pro Tour event in mid-April in spectacular fashion, he recorded dominant victories such as 6-0 vs Wade and 6-1 vs Van Gerwen. His averages, in order, were as follows - 111, 101, 103, 95, 101, 103 and 110, only dropping eleven legs in total over seven matches.

This was followed by a couple surprising early exits on the European Tour but it wasn’t long before the Welshman struck gold again, winning the Dutch Darts Championship in Rosmalen just shy of two weeks ago. He registered wins against the likes of Humphries and Ross Smith on his way to the title, not to mention having to recover from 5-2 down in the final against Niko Springer, winning six of the last seven legs.

This was followed up quickly with another good run on the Euro Tour last weekend. He looked like he may go back-to-back titles overseas as the draw began to open up, unfortunately for Jonny he walked into a barnstormer of a performance by Damon Heta, exiting at the semi finals stage. However, eight consecutive wins on the Euro Tour against a pretty high calibre of player isn’t going to do your confidence any harm and he’ll come here with high spirits.

The path to the semi finals for Clayton doesn’t look too daunting either, he faces Darius Labanauskas first round which would likely be followed by a QF tie against Stephen Bunting, who he’s in better form than at the moment. There’s a high chance he could face Luke Littler in the semi finals, this shouldn’t phase him too much considering he beat the current World Champion at the Winmau World Masters in February.

There’s so many positives around Jonny at the moment and 12/1 looks a tad too big, considering some of the other names that are at the same price or shorter.

0.5 units Andreas Harrysson e/w (1/3 - 2 Places) @ 66/1

I was looking for a bit of value in the bottom half of the draw, as it’s hard to confidently back one of Humphries or Price at shorter odds when they likely play each-other at the quarter finals stage and neither have played competitively since Finals Night of Premier League.

So instead I’ve opted for the long odds of Swede Andreas Harrysson at 66/1. He has a tendency to produce his best stuff when there’s more eyes watching and he proved that again last weekend, going on an impressive run to the Last 16 of the European Darts Open in Leverkusen.

Dirty Harry recorded very impressive victories over Van Barneveld and Michael Smith before giving eventual finalist Damon Heta a run for his money. The latter being a 6-1 demolition and averaging 106. It shows exactly what he’s capable of and makes you wonder how he doesn’t qualify for more of these events. He played in just one European Tour event last year and it was similarly impressive - defeating Gian Van Veen 6-1 with a 107 average before narrowly losing 6-5 to Gary Anderson. Not to mention he’s had several good weeks on the Modus Live League.

The path to the semi finals looks as achievable as it realistically could have been - Andreas faces one of the most out-of-form seeds in Rob Cross, he has a real good chance in that one and if he prevails he’ll face one of Chris Dobey or fellow countryman Jeffrey De Graaf in the quarter finals. He would likely need to cause a big upset in the semis against one of Humphries or Price, but at the odds, it’s well worth a go.

Harrysson is a streaky player who can average anything from 75 to 110. Here’s hoping he has a good week as the big Swede certainly isn’t intimidated about coming up against the biggest names in the sport.
