2.5 units Michael Van Gerwen @ 8/1

MVG came good for us in Amsterdam last weekend, winning his quarter of the draw at 5/1. There had been signs that a big tournament was coming for Van Gerwen, it’s fair to say he had exactly that. Of course, having the home crowd on his side and with his daughter in attendance would have been extra motivation for Mighty Mike to produce the goods, but you can’t take away from what ended up being a breathtaking few days for Michael.

The Green Machine’s first televised title in two years was all the more impressive given the extremely difficult path he had to conquer - MVG seen off Nijman, Cross, Humphries, Rock and Littler in an incredible run, considering at least three of those listed are very much in the top five players form wise this year. A lack of consistency has been one of the main downfalls of Van Gerwen in recent years, but he was consistently excellent in the Netherlands, recording averages of 105, 99, 106, 102 and 98.

As far as I’m aware, MVG’s good friend and former professional Vincent Van der Voort is working very closely with Michael on his game, making sure he puts in the hard work to match the abundance of talent he has, it seems to be paying dividends now.

The draw doesn’t look too shabby at all this week for MVG - he plays the winner of Andrew Gilding vs Matthew Dennant, before a potential tie against Ryan Searle or Danny Noppert, neither of whom are in their best form of late.

It looks a golden chance to make the Sunday evening session and given his recent boost of confidence, he may fancy his chances of getting the job done again. This is the closest we can get to saying Van Gerwen is “back” so far, if he can pick up another title this week in Budapest then it’s really time to start believing it.

0.75 units James Wade (each-way 1/2 - 2 Places) @ 40/1

It was a fairly easy decision to go for Wade again this week, we backed him outright in Amsterdam in the hope that he could pull off a opening round upset against Luke Humphries. He was agonisingly close to doing so, missing two match darts before eventually losing a deciding leg to the world number one. I’m sure Wade won’t berate himself over that for too long, given the bags of experience he already has, he’ll be accustomed to getting over defeats quickly.

The Machine has quietly been one of the most consistent players on tour this year, winning a large percentage of his games with minimal first-round exits.

The Pro Tour win and runs to the final of both the UK Open and World Matchplay were impressive, but what’s really caught my eye with James this year is his more than steady record in the Euro Tours - the Euro Tour hadn’t been too happy a hunting ground for Wadey in recent times, considering he’d only made one quarter-final in his previous 16 Euro Tour appearances before this year.

But in 2025, James has made four semi-finals in ten Euro Tours events this year, including the last three. It’s only a matter of time till he goes one step further to at least the final you’d imagine.

The draw has also been fairly kind to him, Luke Woodhouse likely awaits him on Saturday before a potential tie against one of Peter Wright or Kim Huybrechts, one I’d strongly fancy Wade to come through.

He will possibly have to get by Rock or Bunting to make the semis, but we’ve already seen from him this year that he’s a challenge for anyone. 40/1 seems outrageously good odds, given the form Wade has shown in 2025. All that’s missing from this year is a big stage title, I do think he’ll manage one in the next few months and this looks as good a chance as any.
