We are just two days away from the PDC World Darts Championship returning to Alexandra Palace for what is one of the sporting staples of the winter calendar.

Darts fans are going to be treated in the run-up to Christmas and will have an excellent way to see in the New Year, particularly if this year's final can live up to the billing of last year's thriller between champion Michael Smith and Michael van Gerwen.

As the tournament's opening day nears, we preview some of the high-profile players set to descend on London this week.

One in particular is the very own Queen of the Palace, Fallon Sherrock, who made history back in 2019 when she became the first female to win a World Championship match. Can she create more history at Ally Pally this winter?

PDC World Darts Championship Markets

  • Fallon Sherrock to win the tournament - 750/1
  • 2 or more nine-dart finishes across the tournament - 9/4

That is where she picked up her impressive nickname and she is sure to get a warm welcome when she returns to this part of London later this week.

Everyone remembers when Sherrock stole all the headlines at Ally Pally four years ago when she upset Ted Evetts on her World Championship debut, in what was a groundbreaking moment for darts. She will have the crowd behind her once again when she takes on Jermaine Wattimena in her World Darts Championship opener on Sunday December 17, with German number two Martin Schindler awaiting the winner in round two.

She sealed her Ally Pally return by winning four consecutive PDC Women's Series titles, winning 29 matches in a row during this period. Sherrock has claimed five titles on the Series in 2023, so she will be heading back to the capital with confidence.

The 29-year-old also achieved her first two nine-dart finishes this season against Marco Verhofstad and Adam Lipscombe respectively. She and her fans will be hoping that she can deliver once again, this time on the Ally Pally stage - making further history at the biggest event on the darts calendar.

Rod Studd previewed the Queen of the Palace's chances of going all the way this year. He tells Betfred: "She's been back to the Palace twice since then [her emphatic debut in 2019/20], losing in the first round on both occasions to Steve Beaton and Ricky Evans. But Fallon has had a decent 2023, winning five tournaments on the PDC Women's Series, and having two nine-darters this year as well.

"Sherrock starts off with a clash against the Dutch speedster Jermaine Wattimena, where she is 21/10 to cause another headline-grabbing upset."

Will the Queen of the Palace reign supreme in 2024?
