Over 3.5 sets in Raymond van Barneveld vs Stefan Bellmont @ 4/9
It’s always an occasion when Barney steps up onto that Ally Pally stage, but it’d be fair to say he’s had more bad memories here than good for some time now.
The five-time World Champion has failed to go beyond the fourth round in any of his last six appearances at Ally Pally. It’s been another disappointing year for RVB and I’d say it’s very much up for debate as to whether this could be the last time we see him in a World Championship. His inclusion in a World Seniors event earlier in the year suggests he was looking towards possible retirement.
Bellmont has only played here once before, losing 3-0 to Jermaine Wattimena on debut last year. He is a solid player though, he’s won three Challenge Tour events this year and you don’t do that unless you have something about you.
He qualified for the Grand Slam last month and gave a decent account of himself, beating James Wade 5-4 and losing narrowly (5-4) to Ricky Evans. If he can give those two a run for their money, then I see no reason why he can’t take at least a set off a struggling Barneveld.
Raymond went out in the opening round of the World Matchplay, World Grand Prix and European Championship this year - and he didn’t even manage to qualify for the Players Championship finals due to a lack of wins on the Pro Tour.
Everything is tough work for him at the moment and I think you could probably describe this match the same way. It’s unlikely he’ll make it easy for himself. Over 3.5 sets looks a pretty safe bet to me.
Over 3.5 sets in Martin Schindler vs Stephen Burton @ 8/15
Schindler is a player who’s never really kicked on as many would have liked him to, certainly where major tournaments are concerned.
'Schindy' has never gone past the Last 32 stage in six previous appearances at the World Championship, and has only ever made two major quarter-finals in his career. It’s nowhere near good enough for a player who has three European Tour titles and a Pro Tour title to his name in the last couple of years.
Burton is yet to win a set in two previous appearances at the Ally Pally, losing in straight sets to Ryan Searle and Alexander Merkx in 2018 and 2024 respectively.
Let’s hope it’s third time lucky for Bertie, and I think it could be as he’s played some decent stuff of late. He’s averaged 94+ in seven of his last 10 games and he's played some good darts to make it here through the Tour Card Holder Qualifier.
Stats wise, there’s not actually a great deal between the pair of late - 92.65 from Schindler plays 90.57 from Burton in the overall averages over the last three months.
With him being a big favourite in this match, I can see nerves coming into play for 'The Wall' and I think Stephen is playing well enough to cash in with at least one set of his own.
