Reyes to hit over 2.5 180s vs Van Veen @ 8/13
I think one of the most exciting stories of the first round in this year’s World Championship could and should be the long-awaited return of Cristo Reyes. The Spartan hasn’t been seen in PDC since COVID-19 struck, with his last match on a big stage coming way back in March 2020 at the UK Open. He was a notable loss to the tour as he was a quality player on his day and did enjoy some success at Ally Pally in the past, reaching the last 16 on his Worlds debut back in 2015.
It was a pleasant surprise to see him participate in the Mediterranean Qualifier and come through - it’s a very small sample size but over the three matches with recorded averages, he averaged 97.61 overall, securing victories of 6-0, 7-1 and 7-4, so he can clearly still play to a high level.
Van Veen has been outstanding this year and looks to be emerging as one of the main threats to try and put an end to the recent dominance of the two Luke’s. My one worry with Gian is his World Championship record - albeit he’s only played here a couple times, but he’s yet to win a match at Ally Pally, suffering disappointing defeats to Man Lok Leung and Ricardo Pietreczko. I think it’ll be hard to get that out of his mind in the opening round and we could see some nerves from him, opening the door for this to potentially go at least four sets.
That’s why I think over 2.5 on Reyes 180s is a decent play at 8/13 - he hit 8 180s across 25 legs in the three matches I mentioned above (0.32 180s per leg). If he continues at that rate then he’ll have absolutely no issues hitting 3+ 180s in what is sure to be one of the most intriguing matches in the last 128.
Highest checkout to be over 110.5 in R. Evans vs Man Lok Leung @ 1/3
I just said that Reyes vs Van Veen is one of the most intriguing matches of the opening round, well this one is bound to be one of the most exciting. Two brilliant characters on the oche in the form of Ricky Evans and Man Lok Leung. This one will be played at a ferocious pace, with two of the quickest throwers in the tournament coming head-to-head.
The pace should suit both down to the ground and hopefully brings out the best in them. Man Lok won over the Ally Pally crowd on his debut in the 2024 edition of the event, when he came from 2-0 down to beat Gian Van Veen, before giving Gabriel Clemens a run for his money in a 3-1 defeat.
It wouldn’t be the Worlds without Ricky Evans being involved, would it? The Kettering man is box office and usually comes to life on the Ally Pally stage. He loves a big finish too - in seven of the last ten matches Rapid has played here, he’s hit a 121+ checkout. Eight of those were the same length of format as this (best of five sets). Man Lok Leung landed a 126 checkout in that match against Clemens, so is also capable of chipping in with a big one.
With there being a relatively high chance that this could go the distance or at least have four sets, a checkout of over 110.5 to be hit looks the most sensible bet of all in this mouthwatering clash.
