Callan Rydz most 180s vs Daryl Gurney @ 1/2
Rydz continued his love affair with this venue as he dispatched Patrik Kovacs in straight sets in the opening round, the 3-0 scoreline was perhaps a touch flattering for Callan but regardless of that, the job was done in relatively stress-free fashion. He’ll most likely have to go up a couple of gears from the 88 average he posted, as Gurney is a grinder and will nick sets if Rydz isn’t on his game.
Gurney was priced up as a 6/5 outsider against Beau Greaves, something I didn’t quite agree with given his pedigree and vastly richer experience than Beau. In the end, it could have gone either way but it was Superchin who grinded out a 3-2 win, much to the disappointment of the crowd who were almost all supporting Greaves.
You could be forgiven that Rydz would perhaps struggle against the more methodical pace of Gurney, but it hasn’t really been the case. Gurney won their two most recent meetings 6-3 and 6-2 in the last six months, but Rydz had won all six of their meetings prior to that. Proving that a slower opponent doesn’t necessarily affect his rhythm too much.
I think 180s is probably the safer route to go down with this one - Rydz hit four maximums in three sets against Kovacs, whereas Gurney only managed two in five sets against Greaves. Callan is averaging 0.31 180s per leg for the year, compared to 0.22 per leg for Gurney. Rydz needs to ram home the advantage of having the better scoring power as he could be outdone on the doubles. The Riot to pin most 180s looks a good bet at 1/2.
Over 7.5 180s in Danny Noppert vs Justin Hood @ 4/9
Well, if these two play anything like they did in the first round then we’re in for an absolute treat. Justin Hood had one of the most impressive debut performances I can remember on the Ally Pally stage - Happy Feet averaged just shy of 100, hitting five 180s and hitting 43% of his doubles. It was faultless really and reducing Nick Kenny to just four doubles tells you all you need to know about how dominant he was.
Noppert was tested a lot more against a vibrant Jurjen Van der Velde, it was a hard-fought battle but Noppert’s scoring was just too strong in the end and resulted in a 3-1 win over his fellow Dutchman. A 96.62 average, 43% on doubles and seven 180s made it arguably his best performance to date at the Ally Pally, given he’s struggled previously.
Clearly we have two players full of confidence and with full faith in their abilities, Noppert’s experience and consistency makes him far more likely to get over the line, but at 1/4 I feel it’s too skinny a price for me to get involved. Instead, I’ll try and cash in on the form being shown by both by backing a load of maximums to be hit. They hit twelve maximums between them in the opening round, so over 7.5 180s between them shouldn’t be too big an ask, particularly if the match goes more than four sets. Noppert’s 180 hitting in recent months has been supreme so he’ll likely lead the way, with Hood expected to chip in with at least a few.
