Max Hopp most 180's vs Luke Woodhouse @ 20/21
It’s really nice to see Hopp back on the big stage, a player with a big presence up on the oche and always entertaining to watch. The much loved German won his tour card back at Q-School in January, having fell off tour at the end of 2022. He hasn’t done anything massively noteworthy but done enough to qualify for this through the Pro Tour order of merit. He could be cashing in now as he defeated Martin Lukeman 3-1 in the opening round.
Hopp will probably have to improve on that first round performance if he wants to progress further, an 88 average likely won’t be enough against Woodhouse. Woody wasn’t at his best but still got the job done comfortably enough with a 3-1 victory over Boris Krcmar in the opening round. I think the main reason for Woodhouse’s improved results this year is that his B/C game is a lot better than it used to be, he’s got in a nice habit of winning matches even when he’s not firing on all cylinders.
I think Woody will just edge this due to having more consistency in his game, but he looks to have been priced up about right so I don’t see any value there. I much prefer the look of Hopp to hit most 180s at 20/21 - The Maximiser hit seven 180s in four sets against Lukeman, with Woody only hitting three in the same amount of sets. Max also hit four 180s against Price in a much shorter format of first to six legs at the recent Players Championship Finals. He appears to be in a rich vein of form with the maximums and I fancy the German to continue that here.
Rob Cross under 3.5 180's vs Ian White @ 4/6
It’s been a year to forget for Cross but he has a chance to put things right with a big run at the Worlds. Cor Dekker was viewed as a difficult opening tie for Rob and a potential banana skin, but Voltage rubbished that with a fairly convincing straight sets win over the Norweigan. This match could be equally as comfortable if Ian White plays to the same level as he did against Mervyn King.
It was a hugely scrappy match against Merv, with the pair of them averaging only 81. White hit less than 30% of his doubles and will need to score and finish a lot better to have any hope against Cross. I can’t see this being a match to remember, with the pair losing their last eleven matches between them coming into the World Championship.
I’m going to opt for Cross to hit under 3.5 180s, in the hope that he gets the job done in three or four sets. 180s have been few and far between for Cross - he’s averaging 0.23 180s per leg, which means he’d need around 17/18 legs to hit four. He only managed two maximums in his win over Dekker and infact hasn’t hit more than two 180s in 20 of his last 21 matches. He has a tendency to switch to 19s as he’s quite picky about the way his darts lie in the treble 20 bed, fingers crossed we see that continue.
