Matches between these two tend to be tightly contested, with all of their first to six legs matches finishing 6-4 or 6-5. It’s Ryan who has the upper hand though, leading the head-to-head 3-1.
Neither of them were at their best in the opening round but ultimately did enough to get the job done. Searle’s victory was a lot more routine, defeating Chris Landman in straight sets with a 93 average, dropping only three legs. Dolan was far from his best but the timing of his big shots were perfection really and put a bit of gloss on the scoreline for him. The History Maker was outscored for large spells in the match but clutch finishing on the doubles at times got him out of jail.
I can see this match taking a similar pattern, Searle is evidently the heavier scorer of the two, with Ryan having a first 9 average of 104.77 for the year, compared to 98.86 for Dolan. The doubles are where Dolan can potentially level things out a bit and he’ll need plenty more big finishes if he’s any hope of winning this match. Brendan had checkouts of 170, 106 and 101 in his win over Tavis Dudeney which proved to be pivotal in getting over the line. 4/6 for him to do that just once here seems generous.
Over 7.5 total 180s in Chris Dobey vs Andrew Gilding @ 4/11
The quicker Dobey puts his first round performance out of his mind, the better. It was match to forget really for the Geordie as he had a doubling disaster on the outer-ring. Chris hit just 27% of his doubles in his 3-1 win over Xiaochen Zong, missing a total of 27 darts at the end of legs. Ultimately a win is a win so he shouldn’t lose too much sleep over it and despite all the missed doubles, he still averaged just shy of 93 so actually scored pretty well, which is his main strength.
Dobey knows he’ll need to scrub up on the doubles if he’s to beat Andrew Gilding who was very impressive in his 3-1 win over Cameron Crabtree. Some argued that Crabtree was favourite but it was the experienced head of Gilding who bossed the game with a 98 average, with all his winning sets being won to nil.
The head-to-head is pretty tight, with Dobey leading 4-3 in the previous meetings. It wouldn’t be a massive surprise to me if this went four or five sets, as a few of their matches have been tightly contested. It would certainly do no harm to the chances of our selection which is over 7.5 180s in the match - combined, they managed nine 180s between them in the opening round, with both their matches going four sets. Together, they are averaging 0.57 180s per leg for the year, at that rate they’d only require around 14 legs to reach eight maximums between them, which I feel is almost guaranteed in what could turn into a bit of a battle.
