Luke Woodhouse to beat Ricky Evans @ 8/13
Luke Woodhouse has continued to go through the gears this year and really seems to be establishing himself as a genuine contender to go deep in these major tournaments. Three wins out of three saw him top his group ahead of Bunting, Schindler and Toylo. Woody is hitting over 50% of his doubles across the tournament so far and if he keeps that up, he’ll be extremely tough to beat.
Evans was a surprise qualifier from his group, heading through with Gerwyn Price as the much fancied James Wade suffered an early exit. A win in his opening game against Price put him in a great position and he managed to back it up with a hard-fought win over Stefan Bellmont which saw him secure qualification with a game to spare.
It’s been a good couple weeks for Rapid, but I still don’t think he’s as reliable as Woodhouse. Woody has been gaining plenty experience in these majors this past year or so and seems well equipped to continue pushing on.
Luke has won 12 of his last 13 matches and I struggle to see past him continuing that momentum train he’s on just now. He seems to be better under pressure these past few months and can dictate the game at his pace, which may be the downfall of Ricky here. 8/13 is a fair price.
Jurjen Van der Velde to hit over 2.5 180s @ 4/7
Van der Velde was put through the ringer as he just managed to secure qualification through his group. He looked up against it when he lost his opening match to Chris Dobey 5-1, but a scrappy win over Martin Lukeman before winning a straight shootout match over the more experienced Damon Heta saw him upset the odds and progress.
However, he failed to average above 90 in any of his three matches so far, so really will need to find several more gears to compete with Luke Humphries.
Humphries coasted through what looked like a potentially tricky group with minimal fuss. Three wins from three and a leg difference of +9, his best performance coming in his most recent match against Nathan Aspinall with a 103 average and he looks like he has more in the tank.
He’s won two of his three previous matches against Jurjen and I think he’ll make relatively light work of this one.
The better value looks to be in Van der Velde 180s, where he’s priced at 4/7 to hit over 2.5 maximums. The young Dutchman is averaging 0.23 180s per leg over the last year, meaning he should only need 13 legs to hit three 180s. Although I think Humphries wins comfortably, we should get 13+ legs. I don’t think anybody fancies Jurjen to win this so hopefully he can just relax with the pressure off and get his scoring going.
