Belgian Darts Open Draw

1.25 units Michael van Gerwen each-way @ 12/1
It’s very much been a mixed bag from MVG in the early stages of 2026 - the Dutchman got off to a flying start in the first World Series events of the year, winning the title in Bahrain and reaching the final in Saudi Arabia. He also got off to a great start in the Premier League, making the final in the opening two nights, winning one of them. He then had to withdraw from Night 3 and is yet to rediscover his form in it yet.
Mighty Mike could probably count himself as an unlucky loser in Germany last weekend in his first European Tour event of the year as he lost out 6-2 to Niels Zonneveld, despite averaging 107 himself. It’s been inconsistent at this tournament in previous years for Michael - he’s exited in his opening round match in three of his four appearances in this, but he only went and won the title here in 2023, so can perhaps take some comfort from getting the job done here in the past.
The main threat to him in this quarter of the draw has to be Nathan Aspinall, he was the other name on my shortlist in this half. Before he can think about playing Nathan, he’ll need to weave his way through the opening couple rounds which I very much fancy him to do.
Michael Smith or Mickey Mansell await on the Saturday, neither of whom are showing any sort of form to worry MVG, then a likely tie again Damon Heta or Daryl Gurney in the Last 16, again, opponents that won’t worry him too much. He’s spoke about prioritising the ranking events this year, so I’m expecting to see some big showings from the Green Machine on the Euro Tour this year.

1 units Jonny Clayton each-way @ 25/1
The odds were too tempting to refuse for Jonny in the end, in a mini-section of the draw where I was spoilt for choice in terms of who to back in all honesty - Wessel Nijman was a very appealing option this week having won his first big stage title in style last weekend in Germany, but the odds are a bit skinny as a result of that victory. Ross Smith too was considered but I wasn’t overly impressed with his showing in Germany last weekend when he was on our outright card.
Clayton must have a thing for this tournament or playing in Belgium as he’s been impressively consistent here - from 2022 to 2025, the Welshman has gone SF, QF, QF, QF, reaching the Sunday on all four occasions. He’ll have to manoeuvre his way through a really tough section if he’s to do so this time round - Wessel Nijman is the likely Saturday opponent, if he wins that then it’s likely Ross Smith, with the likes of Stephen Bunting and Martin Schindler to potentially contend with after that.
It’s going to be tough work for The Ferret if he’s to come close to prevailing this weekend, but that’s why we’re getting such good odds of 25/1 on him and considering his excellent form in the Premier League, it looks the best value if he can bring that winning habit to Belgium.

0.25 units Niels Zonneveld each-way @ 100/1
With this pick, I’ll be dreaming about a Luke Littler withdrawal overnight! On a more serious note though, regardless of who he may potentially be up against, 100/1 is more than a fair price for Zonneveld who I continue to be impressed by. He’s always been a player I’ve been keen on on the Pro Tour, but there’s been increasing signs of encouragement from him on the Euro Tour - Niels went on a brilliant run to the semi-finals in Germany last weekend, before running into a barrage from good friend and eventual champion Wessel Nijman.
Triple Z did enjoy some nice wins over the course of the weekend - he saw off three fellow Dutchmen in Michael Van Gerwen, Jermaine Wattimena and Richard Veenstra. He averaged 96+ in four of his five matches and that sort of level will see him win more games than not. Jani Haavisto in the opening round should be a comfortable win, then he’ll face fans favourite this weekend Mike De Decker, who he does have better form than recently. He can bump into Littler in the Last 16 but here’s hoping he withdraws or gets toppled before then. If he can go beyond The Nuke in the tournament, the draw will begin to open up more. Worth a very small stake at triple figure odds.
