Monday marks day one of the World Grand Prix Darts 2024, and to mark the start of the event, Betfred Insights' Darts expert, Sean Rafferty, is on hand to deliver his predictions.

Read below for Sean's Darts betting tips for the first day of the World Grand Prix Darts 2024.

Darts Betting Tips - Monday, October 7

  • Ryan Joyce +1.5 sets handicap @ 8/15
  • Jonny Clayton to win @ 8/15
  • Luke Humphries to win @ 4/9

Boosted treble @ 12/5 11/4

Ryan Joyce +1.5 sets handicap @ 8/15

Joyce only has one previous appearance here in 2020, where he progressed through the first round, beating Peter Wright 2-0 with a brilliant 97 average, before narrowly losing to Chisnall 3-2. If any of the majors suit Ryan it should be this one - he’s statistically one of the best D16 hitters in the world, which could be a handy weapon for him this week.

Josh Rock also has one previous appearance here, last year where he was well beaten 2-0 by MVG and averaged just 73. I think it’d be fair of me to say that doubles are Rock’s weakness and he’d admit that himself - his doubles are 39.84 per cent over the last 12 months, compared to 44.9 per cent for Joyce.

Joyce recently enjoyed a 6-1 win over Rock in July and this format should lean in his favour more so. I can see Relentless definitely picking up a set and perhaps the match.

Jonny Clayton to win @ 8/15

Nobody can deny that Ritchie Edhouse has played the best stuff of his career this year, which is now seeing him qualify for the likes of this and the Matchplay. What I would say though, is that it’s pretty evident that it’s mainly power scoring that is seeing Edhouse climb up the rankings and not so much his finishing. I do think doubling it could be a bit of a curveball for Madhouse.

Statistically, their doubles percentage is similar over the last 12 months; however, I think Edhouse's doubles can come undone under pressure on the big televised stage, where he’s still unproven. Clayton’s efficiency on the left side of the board, particularly D16/D8 could be telling in this match. The Ferret won this back in 2021 with a sensational win over Gerwyn Price in the final, so he comes to this event where he has some good memories to fall back on. I reckon experience gets Clayton over the line in this one despite it looking tight on paper.

Luke Humphries to win @ 4/9

I covered a fair bit on this match in my tournament preview article, as Humphries is my main outright selection. I fancy him to get the job done here against Stephen Bunting. D16 played a pivotal role in Humphries’ journey to Grand Prix victory last year in Leicester, and he’ll be reliant on it again in this match. If he keeps getting in quickly in legs, then I just can’t see him getting beat.

Cool Hand will take encouragement from his PC26 title win on Thursday, where he defeated The Bullet 8-7 in the final. That may play in Bunting’s head who will do well to recover from the disappointment of losing all three Pro Tour finals last week, as well as perhaps taking a fair bit out of him stamina-wise, having played 21 matches in total over the three days. Bunting has failed to go beyond the second round in seven of his nine previous WGP appearances, so doesn’t boast a great record.

I like Humphries’ chances this week so still expect him to get over the line in this shorter format at 4/9.
