Ritchie Edhouse most 180s @ 4/6
It’s been a dream year for Ritchie. It would be fair to say most would’ve classed him as a bit of a “journeyman” at the start of 2024 and it would be hard to argue against that comment. Having been on tour for a number of years and never really threatening to break into the top 32.
However he continuously managed to come through Euro Tour qualifiers this year to give himself numerous opportunities there and establish himself more in-front of the big crowds, and on the bigger stages.
He was knocking in some impressive averages too on both the Euro Tour and Pro Tour, without quite threatening to win a title. Until he completed a dream win at the European Championship in Dortmund - Madhouse beat the likes of Gary Anderson, Michael Smith and Gian Van Veen on his way to victory. This was a career changing moment for Ritchie and in my opinion will have improved his mentality and belief in his own game and the heights he can reach.
He’s earned four times as much money in 2024 than he has in any other calendar year which tells you the strides he’s took as a player this year.
Ian White had the easiest passage of all to the last 64, by not having to throw a dart. Diamond got a bye through the first round after a later withdrawal from his opponent Sandro Eric Sosing. He’s always been a capable scorer on his day and a cracking floor player when at his peak, but TV form has always been a bit of a struggle for White. One QF in eleven World Championship appearances is disappointing, considering he was in or around the world's top 10 for large periods between 2014 and 2020.
Edhouse does look the likely winner of this one, but in case he doesn’t handle the pressure of coming here as a strong favourite for the first time, I’ll concentrate on him hitting 180s instead. He’s averaging 0.27 180s per leg for the year compared to 0.20 for White. Doubles are where Edhouse can come unstuck but maximums are rarely an issue, I expect him to hit at least a few and likely more than White, so you can’t say fairer than 4/6 for that outcome.
Callan Rydz to win @ 6/5
I wasn’t quite sure what to make of Callan’s chances at the Worlds this year, given he can be a really tricky player to predict. He did more than impress in his thumping 3-0 victory over a helpless Romeo Grbavac who averaged 98 himself. The Riot averaged 107, crucially hitting 60% of his doubles. Doubles can often be the undoing of Callan but it goes to show that when he’s finding them he can reach a seriously high level of play.
He’s been known to be rather hot-headed on the oche and struggle to keep his emotions in check, normally due to frustration at the way he’s playing. But listening to recent interviews he looks to be fairly laidback by his standards and seems to be happy with the preparation and practice regime he had coming into the event. If Rydz is in a good place mentally then that makes him a very dangerous opponent for anyone.
This is where he really made his breakthrough, reaching the QFs here in 2022 so can look back with fond memories.
The Geordie boy now sits 43rd in the rankings, he’s a better player than that so will look to make inroads back towards the top 32 and this event is starting to look like a decent opportunity to do so as he isn’t defending much ranking money from two years ago. This is a player who has three Pro Tour titles to his name since 2021 and has to be respected.
Schindler has made steady progress again this year, enjoying some great success on the Euro Tour with two titles. The majors still prove a big hurdle for The Wall though - excluding the World Cup, the German has only ever made two major ranking QFs and failed to go further than that.
He hasn’t went beyond the last 32 in five previous Ally Pally appearances. I make this relatively 50/50 so to see Rydz at 6/5 is too tempting to ignore, he may need a good start or the head could go down but he’s worth taking a gamble on in this one.
