Mansell to hit under 3.5 180s

Mickey didn’t make things easy for himself in the first round, winning 3-1 over Tomoya Goto in an ugly match. 'The Cyclone' averaged just 81, despite hitting 52% of his doubles which tells you how poor his scoring was.

He won’t get away with that type of performance here against Jonny Clayton who should definitely prove a far stiffer test for the Northern Irishman. They have a level head-to-head record at 3-3. But Clayton without doubt has had a far more successful career to date, with a couple of major titles under his belt.

I reckon he’ll come here fairly confident about his chances in a very open section of the draw. He’ll have one eye on Premier League still as a few of the spots up for grabs are there to be had in my opinion. A good run here could see him in contention.

As I think Clayton will probably get this done 3-0 or 3-1, I can’t help but think Mansell to hit less than four 180s looks outstanding value at 8/11.

Mansell hit just one 180 in four sets in that match against Goto, averaging just 0.05 per leg. Even his yearly stats are 0.19 180s per leg, meaning on average he’d need around 20 legs to hit 4+ maximums. I don’t see this match having more than 15 legs, plain and simply.

What an intriguing match this could be between two players that have only been on the tour for a couple of years each but have both made their mark already.

Van Veen is the one tipped to have the bigger future, being the younger player who regularly posts some brilliant numbers. He’s still searching for his maiden PDC ranking title, but it feels like a matter of when as opposed to if.

Ricardo has had a more topsy-turvy experience as a PDC pro so far, achieving real highs on the Euro Tour, winning the German Darts Championship last year and backing that up with a final and semi-final on Euro Tour this year.

He definitely seems to raise his game more for the big events and big crowds - he made the last 32 last year and pushed Humphries very close in that round. He also made the quarter-finals of the European Championship and the last 16 of the Grand Prix in recent months.

Odds of 5/2 feel a touch insulting. I don’t have that much in it myself given he’s arguably achieved more to date in televised events than his Dutch opponent.

However, I’m going to concentrate on Pikachu hitting a big checkout. It’s a bit of a strength in the locker that I’m not sure he gets credit for. He managed a 158 checkout in his 3-0 win over Zong in the opening round and in his three matches at the World Championship last year, his highest checkouts in each match were 116, 129 and 121.

Recently he went on a run of five matches where his highest checkouts were 164, 160, 154, 142 and 124 - four of these matches were only first to six legs. I fancy this one to have 15-20 legs potentially so a barrel load of opportunities for Pikachu to nail an eye-catching checkout.
