Czech Darts Open Draw

1 unit Stephen Bunting (each-way 1/2 - 2 Places) @ 14/1
We backed Stephen last week and although we didn’t get much of a run for our money, it’s extremely hard to argue that he done anything wrong. The Bullet brushed aside Joe Cullen 6-1 in his opening match last weekend in Antwerp, with a near flawless display, averaging 107.47 with 6/8 on the doubles. He then found himself massively unfortunate to be on the losing side against Josh Rock, where he lost out 6-5 to the Northern Irishman, despite averaging 103.8 himself. Bunting was looming on 56 for the match but wasn’t afforded a shot as Rock took out a shanghai finish, who then went on to reach the final.
Nothing suggests that Bunting won’t be able to bounce straight back from that sore defeat, given the relentless form he’s in of late. He’s now averaged 100+ in 13 of his last 17 matches, with him also hitting 50% or more of his doubles in 5 of his last 9 matches. If he can find that combination of heavy scoring and hitting around half of his intended targets on the outer-ring, he becomes a formidable opponent for anyone.
It’s an interesting draw for Stephen, where he’ll face a tricky opener against one of the in-form Daryl Gurney or Kevin Doets. However, if he comes through that one he arguably has an easier match in the third round, where he could come up against an out-of-form Peter Wright. It looks a fairly straightforward path to the Sunday evening session where he could well come into his own. He’ll take vast inspiration of doing just that considering he managed it in early April at the International Darts Open. In my opinion, Bunting has never been in a better place in his career and this looks like another opportunity to bolster his pedigree heading into the biggest tournaments at the back end of the year.

0.75 units Michael van Gerwen (each-way 1/2 - 2 Places) @ 25/1
I have to admit, I’ve been lured in by the odds for this selection. As most will be aware, it has been a challenging few years for Michael, as he’s slowly found silverware harder to come by, performances have become inconsistent and there’s been a bit of a breakdown with his throwing action, arguably contributing to the loss of form.
However, I still believe there’s more than enough reason to justify backing MVG at huge odds of 25/1. Let’s not forget, he won a Euro Tour event as recently as April this year at the German Darts Grand Prix, without showing a great deal of form in the lead-up to that one. He is still good enough to turn it on for an event from nowhere, given his sheer talent and self-belief.
Despite what I said about the MVG throw, there has been a few signs of slight improvement on that front at the recent Pro Tour events and Euro Tour, this could perhaps be a result of working more closely with good friend Vincent Van der Voort, who will be looking to get a bit more out of MVG’s game in the lead-up to the business end of the year.
To go deep this weekend, he will have to overcome the in-form Josh Rock, whom he does boast an 8-3 winning record over, so will be keen to get revenge for his defeat to Josh at the most recent World Matchplay. It’s still a long road back for Mighty Mike in terms of getting anywhere close to his best again, but these Euro Tour events were his bread and butter in the past, if he can start getting the odd title win here again it will stand him in good stead. 25/1 on The Green Machine looks the standout value in this half of the draw.
