Betfred World Matchplay Saturday Tips
- Over 16.5 legs in Rob Cross vs Dirk Van Duijvenbode @ 4/5
- Over 15.5 legs in Stephen Bunting vs Ryan Joyce @ 4/9
1.5 units Boosted double @ 8/5 15/8
Over 16.5 legs in Rob Cross vs Dirk Van Duijvenbode @ 4/5
It’s been a testing year or so for both of these guys. Dirk struggled with a shoulder injury for a lengthy time and knocked his confidence in the process, there’s been signs of a return to form for Dirk, as we’ve seen several big performances and averages from the Dutchman, however still no titles in recent history. Cross has been far from his best this year and has had a few issues away from the oche to deal with. Again, there’s been odd glimpses of being close to bis best but ultimately very inconsistent.
Surprisingly, these two have only played eachother six times in total, with three wins apiece. Their last meeting was way back in 2023 but they have had a few tight tussles along the way, including a five setter at the World Championship a few years back.
Cross has tasted silverware at the Winter Gardens previously, winning his first and to date only Matchplay title in 2019. Dirk on the other hand, has only made the quarter finals once in three previous appearances to Blackpool.
The bookmakers generally can’t seem to separate them in the match winner market, personally I’m in the same boat. Cross’ superior experience and success in the majors gives him the slight edge in my opinion, but I can’t see him winning it comfortably. A large number of legs looks to be the safest bet in this one.
Over 15.5 legs in Stephen Bunting vs Ryan Joyce @ 4/9
It’s been an odd year for Joyce - he was playing some great stuff on the European Tour earlier in the year, with his scoring power looking to have improved, as this has never been a strength of his. Since then, he’s looked rather ordinary on the whole, averaging below 99 in all of his last 23 matches.
Relentless has had a tendency to save his best stuff for the bigger tournaments in recent times though, which has resulted in runs to the semi finals of the World Grand Prix and last 16 of the UK Open within the past year. I do think he could raise his game for this one which could see Bunting have to dig really deep to get over the line.
The pair met at this stage in the World Matchplay, that one went into overtime with the two clear leg rule coming into play, Bunting eventually getting over the line with a 12-10 win, this one could go in a similar vein I feel. Bunting has lost in the opening round in seven of his previous ten appearances at the Winter Gardens, so it can’t be assumed that he’ll breeze through this. Six or more legs for each player seems a realistic target.
The Betfred Traders have boosted Sean's selections from 8/5 all the way out to 15/8!!
