Gerwyn Price to win tournament @ 5/1
This was a rather easy selection to make - Gezzy unfortunately walked into a huge performance at the World Matchplay from our other pick this week, Josh Rock. Until then, he was continuing his impressive form, recording averages of 109 and 100 in victories over Chris Dobey and Daryl Gurney.
Before that match against Josh, the Welshman had won 22 of his last 24 matches in all competitions, really emphasising just how well he’s been playing since the completion of the Premier League.
One of the other main reasons for selecting The Iceman this week is having a very favourable draw. He plays Joe Comito first who’s generally had a horrible time of it so far in his limited World Series appearances - The Waterboy has incredibly won just one leg across three matches in the World Series, against Michael Smith, Damon Heta and Luke Humphries.
I expect Price to breeze through that one which will see him most likely face Chris Dobey in the quarter-finals, a player who he has a brilliant record against, winning 18 of their previous 22 meetings against each other, including an 11-3 thrashing at the Winter Gardens last month. So I fancy him to reach the semi-finals with minimal fuss, where he’d be likely to face Luke Humphries or Mike De Decker, with both struggling to find their best form at the moment.
Gezzy seems to enjoy playing in this part of the world, winning the first edition of this event last year, as well as winning the New Zealand Darts Masters in 2022. It looks like he’s been continuing his new healthy lifestyle and diet, which has clearly helped him in recent months. The new version of Gerwyn Price is as dangerous as ever and at 5/1 I think he’s great value to defend his title Down Under this weekend.

Josh Rock to win tournament @ 8/1
Josh Rock makes his long awaited World Series debut this weekend and it’s easy to see why he was selected by PDC - young, exciting, fast-paced thrower, big scorer and leaves all his emotions up on the oche. He really is the full package as a darts player and that’s why he’ll be much discussed in terms of getting a Premier League spot next year.
Rocky more than justified his selection when he played a big part in a brilliant World Matchplay tournament last month - my one issue when wanting to back him for televised events in the past was his poor record in the bigger events and struggling to mirror his brilliant form on the Pro and European Tours.
He definitely put that argument to bed at the Winter Gardens, as a string of good performances against top opponents seen him make an eye-catching run to the semi-finals, defeating Ross Smith,
Michael Van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price along the way. Josh posted averages of 104, 95, 104 and even 104 in defeat to eventual champion Luke Littler in a fantastic match. This was quite a defining tournament for Rock in my opinion and could be the catalyst for more deep runs and perhaps even titles in the major tournaments.
Rocky faces the most experienced qualifier in Simon Whitlock in the opening round, the Northern Irishman holds a 3-1 lead in the head-to-head against The Wizard and will certainly fancy his chances of improving that record. Stephen Bunting likely awaits in the quarters, who flattered to deceive at the Winter Gardens and if he gets through that then there’s the possibility of getting revenge on Littler after their match at the World Matchplay.
It’s a tricky path to glory for Rock this week but he is playing the best stuff of his career so far in the televised events and I expect him to make a big impression in his first taste of the World Series.
