Tour de France Stage 16 Preview: Remco ready to beat Pog again

Remco Evenepoel produced his best-ever ride on a mountain stage at the Tour de France as he stayed with the other overall contenders before timing his late surge perfectly to win Sunday's stage 15.

The Belgian is now second on the general classification after Jonas Vingegaard crashed out of the race with 24km to go on the road to Plateau de Solaison.

After Monday's rest day, Tadej Pogacar will resume the race exactly five minutes ahead of Evenepoel but 'Aerobullet' might be about to take more time back on stage 16, a 26.1km time-trial from Evian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains.

The Route

Tuesday's route is simple but by no means straightforward. The riders will begin climbing out of the gate, cresting the category two Cote de Larringes after 9.7km before descending to a rolling run into the finish.

This is the only individual time-trial in this year's Tour de France and the overall contenders are likely to duke it out, but someone will have a bad day on a picturesque parcours that skirts the shores of Lake Geneva.

There was also only one time-trial last year, when Evenepoel beat Pogacar by 16 seconds, but Vingegaard lost over a minute.

Therefore, the 'race of truth' may provide some answers as to who can potentially push on in the final week.

Evenepoel is 4/9 to win his second stage on the spin, with Pogacar 11/5 to make it five stage victories in 2026.

Netcompany-Ineos's Filippo Ganna is 12/1 but the market opens up after that, with Ganna's teammate Josh Tarling fourth in the betting, yet 66/1.

Straight Forecast 1st Evenepoel 2nd Pogacar @ 4/5

Monday's rest day may have freshened some of the peloton up, but it is difficult to overlook Evenepoel and Pogacar, with the Belgian backed to edge his rival.

Remco is the king of the time-trial. He is the three-time defending world champion in the discipline and also took gold at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe leader also won last year's TT in Caen and was 12 seconds better than Pogacar when winning a 25.3km route in 2024.

Already in 2026, Evenepoel has won time-trials at both the UAE Tour and Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and looks too good even for Pogacar.

The yellow jersey won the final-day TT in 2024, but that was more undulating. He is in good form, winning the TT at June's Tour de Suisse, yet even he may have to play second fiddle for the second straight stage.

Thymen Arensman Top Three Finish @ 25/1

Oddsmakers have Ganna and Tarling as Netcompany-Ineos' best hopes on Tuesday, but Thymen Arensman could be worth supporting for a top-three finish behind Pogacar and Evenepoel.

The Dutchman was second behind Ganna in the only time-trial of May's Giro d'Italia, contributing to his fourth-place finish overall.

He has had more freedom at the Tour and has good memories of the race after winning two stages in 2025.

Arensman has not had much impact this year yet may have been saving himself for the final week and can get things going in style with a massive ride on the road to Thonon-les-Bains.
