Unbeaten contender Xander Zayas takes on world-ranked Slawa Spomer this Friday, February 14 at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York. The super welterweight bout features on the undercard for Denys Berinchyk vs Keyshawn Davis. Sky Sports will broadcast the event live.

Here are my Zayas vs Spomer predictions ahead of this intriguing fight.

Zayas vs Spomer Betting Tips

  • Zayas on points @ 4/6
  • Fight to go the distance - Yes @ 1/2

Xander Zayas vs. Slawa Spomer Odds

Zayas is 1/10, owing to his status as one of boxing’s best rising prospects. Spomer is 11/2 to derail the train. A draw between these two is available at 20/1.

Xander Zayas vs. Slawa Spomer Fight Preview

Puerto Rican prospect Zayas is on the cusp of fulfilling the immense promise he has shown since his days in the amateur game. The 22-year-old racked up 11 national championships in the unpaid ranks before crossing over in 2019.

Fans have seen the San Juan boy become a man before their very eyes as he has climbed the super welterweight ladder. Recent wins over the likes of ex-world champion Patrick Teixeira and the solid Damian Sosa have solidified his position on the cusp of world titles.

Spomer is a fighter of a dangerous ilk. Little-known but undefeated in his 20 fights. He is world-ranked by the WBO, owing to his success in securing their ranking titles. But few outside of his German homeland will be too familiar with the 32-year-old.

This presents a crossroads. Is Spomer a fighter whose record has been artificially inflated? A fight engineered for Zayas to impress while taking his opponent’s undefeated record? Or is he one of those undefeated fighters who hasn’t lost simply because he hasn’t found his ceiling? Could he go so much further in the sport and has just been waiting for a big name like Zayas to prove it against?

You do not have to go back far to find an example of the latter. Earlier this month, Wembley Arena gasped as heavy favourite Scott Forrest was knocked out in the first round by 8-0 Aurel Ignat in a shock cruiserweight result. No matter what you think you know about a fighter with an ‘0’, you can never truly observe their ceiling until they reach it.

It is a new position for Zayas. The only two unbeaten fighters he had faced were each having their second outing. The 22-year-old has never fought an experienced fighter with an undefeated record. Someone who is deep into the winning habit required to excel in this sport.

Zayas is still a considerable favourite. His superb talents have led him to the cusp of world honours at an age where most boxers are still finding their feet. He has beaten men who have been at or near the top of the mountain. Zayas’ record is better on paper than Spomer’s.

Xander Zayas vs Slawa Spomer - Method Of Victory Zayas on Points

Odds correct at time of publishing.

This is the point where I reach into The Big Book of Cliches and turn to the page marked “the game isn’t played on paper”. Just because Spomer hasn’t beaten the same level of competition, it does not mean he couldn’t. But you do wonder about a 32-year-old only just fighting a recognisable world name.

Spomer’s best win came over then-unbeaten former European champion Milan Prat. He finished the Frenchman in 10 rounds. Fights like that get you a crack at opponents like Zayas. It is up to Spomer what he does with the opportunity.

Xander Zayas vs. Slawa Spomer Prediction

This is a tricky one to call. I’m convinced of Zayas as the winner, but how good he’ll look is hard to gauge. Spomer is not a bad fighter, but we don’t really know yet just how good he is.

Zayas has won by decision in his last two fights. Those came against fighters I’d rate higher than anyone on Spomer’s resume. But the German has never lost and he has experience at European level.

I think Spomer will hang tough and make it to the final bell. My pick is Zayas on points at 4/6.
