Zayas

Future star Xander Zayas takes on Damian Sosa this Saturday, September 28 at super welterweight. The fight takes place at the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York. The fight, part of the Sandy Ryan vs Mikaela Mayer undercard, will air live on Sky Sports+.

Here are my Zayas vs Sosa predictions ahead of this Big Apple battle.

Zayas vs Sosa Betting Tips

  • Zayas on points @ 8/13

Choosing boxing’s next superstar is a mug’s game. One KO loss later and your touted prospect is propping up cards in some backwater casino in front of six people and a slot-pulling grandma. But there are few safer bets for boxing stardom than Zayas.

11 national amateur titles and a 19-0 pro record, complete with three top-10 world rankings all by the age of 22? Yeah, this kid is going places. Hoping to rip up his map to those places is Sosa, an ambitious 25-2 Mexican who has never been stopped.

These are the fights where you see what sort of minerals your prospect really has. It is a stereotype to say that Mexican fighters like to go to war. Sosa only has 12 knockouts from his 25 wins after all. But he has been hardened in tough bouts with good men and has lost just once in five years.

Zayas is coming into this fight off the back of his best win yet, a wide points win over Patrick Teixeira. The former world champion is a little past his best but had won three coming in. But Teixeira’s championship experience was no match for the body attack of Zayas. He was systematically broken down and thoroughly outfought over the course of the contest.

On paper, this should be an easier night. I’m not entirely convinced it will be, however. Teixeira was perhaps burdened by an awareness that time was no longer on his side. ‘Samurai’ is just 27 and has a handy if unspectacular record. Sosa will be coming into this fight fully convinced he can win.

What a scalp to take. The first fighter who beats Zayas at this point will be lavished with fame and a potent world ranking. It is a lofty prize to aim for and despite the skill-deficit, you can imagine Sosa will throw everything at trying to claim it. This isn’t your typical prospect vs nobody clash that pollutes far too many undercards.

And yet Zayas is an overwhelming favourite, with good reason. This feels like a fighter who can move into the upper echelons just at the time when we inevitably see the likes of Terence Crawford, Oleksandr Usyk and Naoya Inoue take well-earned retirement.

Boxing is a parade of sunrises and sunsets, some premature and some far too late. But when the sport’s current cream evaporates, Zayas is the sort of man you can see shouldering the burden. Someone always does, after all.

Xander Zayas vs Damian Sosa Prediction

I have talked up Sosa’s prospects here and I do think he’ll make this a battle. But you didn’t seriously think I’d back him, did you?

No, sadly for those eyeing a big win I have gone for Zayas on points. Sosa is durable and I don’t think he’s going anywhere in this one. But Zayas has far too much of everything for the tough Mexican. My pick is an 8/13 shot: Zayas on points.
