Sandy Ryan vs Mikaela Mayer Predictions: Mikaela’s New York minute

Sandy Ryan defends her WBO welterweight championship against top American Mikaela Mayer this Friday, September 27. The Madison Square Garden Theater in New York will stage this finely-poised fight. Sky Sports+ will broadcast the match-up live.
Here are my Ryan vs Mayer predictions ahead of a thrilling world title battle.
Ryan vs Mayer Tips
- Mayer to win @ 11/10
Make no mistake, this is a proper fight. Two elite-level competitors facing off with the world title at stake in one of the globe’s finest fight capitals. This is what big-time boxing is all about.
This fight arrives at a pivotal time in both competitors’ careers. Ryan is making the third defence of her world title, having scored perhaps her biggest win last time out. While Terri Harper was an impressive scalp, Ryan’s draw with Jessica McCaskill still smarts. Mayer is her chance to add an elite American to her growing resume.
Mayer is coming off a defeat on her welterweight debut. There is no shame in losing to IBF champion Natasha Jonas, one of the best in the world at any weight. But the split decision defeat derailed Mayer’s campaign to reclaim a world title. The Olympian lost her WBO and IBF lightweight straps to Alycia Baumgardner on another split nod in October 2022.
Ryan and Mayer need each other. For different reasons, this fight was the obvious one to make for both women. Ryan needs a big-name breakthrough to put her skills in front of more eyeballs. Mayer needs a big name scalp and a belt, both of which Ryan can offer. The fighters have everything to gain and even more to lose.
There is a personal issue running through this scrap. Beyond prizes, purses and pride there is an enmity that runs deep. Mayer seems to hold it most fiercely. Ryan began working with Kay Koroma, one of Mayer’s inner coaching circle. Initially helping train both boxers, that uneasy truce did not last. Koroma ended up solely in Ryan’s corner, a development that has caused no end of bitterness between the pair.
Ryan has been keen to emphasise that Emanuel 'Flick' Savoy is her primary trainer and that she made no effort to steal Koroma, rather she is just working with him as part of her team. Mayer insists she is better off with new trainer Kofi Jantuah, who joins longtime coach Al Mitchell in her team.
While both our outwardly saying the coach drama doesn’t matter, both are also talking about it with such frequency and needle that it clearly does. Like the Anthony Joshua-Daniel Dubois sparring stories, the Koroma saga is colouring the build-up here in spite of everyone involved claiming it is inconsequential.
What is not inconsequential is the sheer quality of this match-up. Ryan is a world champion at the top of her game, coming off a career-best win. Mayer is a decorated former champion vying for a belt once again. The American is Ryan’s toughest test yet. The Brit is younger and perhaps fresher, considering the wars Mayer has been in. But there is no substitute for experience, which Mayer brings in abundance.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
This one is close. Ryan is a 3/4 favourite while Mayer is close behind at 11/10. A draw between two fighters who look well-matched is 12/1.

Ryan vs Mayer Prediction
This is a tough one to call, which is exactly how we like it here in the Betcave. Boxing needs competitive match-ups and this one fits the bill.
I like Mayer in this one. Ryan is an excellent fighter, but I just feel like Mayer is the sort of elite talent you see very scarcely. Even in her defeats she has generally had a solid argument for being awarded the decision. Perhaps sympathetic Stateside judges will look kindly on their countrywoman’s efforts here.
I expect this to be another close Mayer fight. But this time I feel like she’ll get the nod at odds of 11/10.
