Ruizfuchs

The WBC interim flyweight title will be on the line as champion Adelaida Ruiz defends against Olympian Ginny Fuchs. The bout will take place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California as part of the undercard for Diego Pacheco vs Maciej Sulecki. DAZN will screen the event live.

Here are my Ruiz vs Fuchs predictions ahead of this title bout.

Ruiz vs Fuchs Tips

While interim titles are questionable at best, it remains incredibly impressive that Fuchs is boxing for one just four fights into her career. While the turnaround time from prospect to champion is shorter in the women’s game, the 2020 Olympian is still ahead of schedule.

Having boxed four rounds on her debut, six in her second bout and eight sessions in her third; Fuchs is taking the next and final step into a 10-rounder. Ruiz has been scheduled to go this distance four times, though only one of those bouts actually made it to the final bell.

Fuchs has largely fought lower-level competition in her trio of match-ups so far. Randee Lee Morales was a straightforward task that she dealt with by knockout. Gemma Ruegg has been in with the likes of Shannon Ryan and Shannon Courtenay, but has never beaten a top fighter. Fuchs outpointed her over six. Indeya Smith had given some rounds to current IBF flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora. Fuchs was able to beat her by decision over eight.

Ruiz offers a far greater sample size of fights to pick from. A decent puncher with eight knockouts from her 16 wins, ‘La Cobra’ is the only fighter to knockout ex-IBF bantamweight champion Maria Cecilia Roman. She beat the experienced Sonia Osorio to win her WBC interim belt in a rematch, after their first fight ended as a draw due to an accidental head clash.

That is the only blemish on Ruiz’s record. At the age of 35, one might wonder if she is coming towards the end of her fine career. But Fuchs is a year older at 36, having stayed in the unpaid ranks while compiling an excellent amateur record.

The oddsmakers have this one as a close-run thing and it is easy to see why. Fuchs was a fine amateur, winning silver at the Pan-American Games to go along with her experience at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. But she is relatively untested as a professional.

Ruiz is unbeaten as a pro and holds a large experience advantage. In Roman, she has proven she can take out a championship-calibre fighter. But one wonders if she is capable of stepping up from interim champion to one day hold a full title.

This is a well-matched battle that is arriving at a crucial time in the careers of these women. While their ages are close, almost everything else is a point of contrast between the two. The ingredients are there for a fine night of action on Saturday.

Ruiz vs Fuchs Fight Odds

The champion is 8/11 to retain her title, taking into account Ruiz’s greater pro experience. Fuchs is 11/10 to pull off the upset and score her fourth professional victory. The draw is available to back at odds of 14/1.

Ruiz vs Fuchs Prediction

I am going to go for the underdog here. While she hasn’t had the chance to prove it just yet, I think Fuchs has enough in her locker to dethrone a champion. Whether that carries over into fighting for the full belt, that is yet to be seen. But I am picking Fuchs to win at odds of 11/10.
