Rocha vs Curiel Predictions: Rough-and-ready rumble gets a rematch

Undefeated Olympian Raul Curiel goes back in with Alexis Rocha this Friday, January 16, at the Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs, California. The welterweight contest headlines a card that also features super bantamweight star ‘Gucci’ Manny Flores and highly-touted amateur Joel Iriarte. DAZN will screen the event live on their platform.
Read on for my Curiel vs Rocha predictions ahead of this intriguing rematch.
Curiel is priced at 10/11 to pick up the victory that frustratingly eluded him in the first meeting. The tough and tricky Rocha is at 1/1, while another draw is priced at 14/1. Surely they won’t draw again… will they?
Rocha vs Curiel Fight Preview
Rocha is a dangerous man. Just ask the litany of can’t-miss prospects and world-ranked hopes whose careers he has taken the sheen off.
Blair Cobbs is precocious, stylish and gifted. He holds victories over former world champions like Maurice Hooker and Adrien Broner. A marketing man’s dream and a trainer’s ideal canvas, Cobbs has lost just once in his career, to Alexis Rocha.
Santiago Dominguez was 26-0 and on the way to world titles until he was outscored by Rocha over 10 rounds. Anthony Young sat in the sanctioning body rankings until Rocha knocked him out in five rounds. 7-0 Cesar Valenzuela never won another fight after his date with the man who collects people’s ‘0’ like Thanos claims Infinity Stones.
Curiel was the latest rising star to struggle when he met Rocha in December 2024. A gruelling, thrilling and hard-fought draw probably taught the Olympian more than he had learned in his 15 previous wins. But the black-and-white world of online boxing criticism deems any blemish near-fatal, and Curiel’s career trajectory was scuppered according to the Twitterati.
A fairer way of looking at it is that in 30 fights, only three boxers have prevented Rocha from leaving with a victory. WBO number-four Rashidi ‘Speedy’ Ellis, former world title challenger Giovanni Santillan and Curiel. That is esteemed company to be keeping,
‘Cugar’ was brave to take the first fight, given Rocha’s propensity for scuppering careers as an underdog. He is even braver to take the rematch. But after blowing the cobwebs off with a routine four-round stoppage of Victor Rodriguez, Curiel is indulging in some fistic hair of the dog.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
The rematch is a brave and laudable avenue for Curiel, not least because the first fight was not a one-punch upset or a poor performance. Rocha was on top of Curiel throughout, and it was trench warfare for the duration. A fight that shortens careers but lengthens legacies.
If Curiel wins, he has slain the dragon and excised the demon. If he loses, the wisdom of taking this rematch will be questioned. It is a hard fight and a draining one. But this could be the making of ‘Cugar’.

Rocha vs Curiel Prediction
I expect Curiel to try and measure Rocha more this time. I fully believe he will come in with the plan to box, not slug it out.
Rocha will rip this game plan to shreds. He comes to do one thing and one thing only: punish. The California hard nut will drag his opponent into a war again. But Curiel, wiser for his experience last time, can win this one at 10/11.
