Raymond Muratalla takes on tough gatekeeper Jesus ‘Ricky’ Perez this Saturday, November 2. The fight takes place at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York on the Robson Conceicao vs O’Shaquie Foster II undercard. Sky Sports Main Event will televise the show.
Here are my Muratalla vs Perez predictions ahead of this lightweight scrap.
Muratalla is one of those can’t-miss prospects you just know you will be hearing about for years to come. 21-0 with 16 knockouts, ‘Danger’ has proved to be exactly that. A tough, gritty points win over former world champion Tevin Farmer last time out has put Muratalla on the path to a title shot.
The 27-year-old is ranked second by the WBC and WBO with the IBF placing him fourth in their rankings. With Denys Berinchyk, Shakur Stevenson and Vasiliy Lomachenko holding those titles, there are some huge fights in the offing. But first, Muratalla must prevail against a fighter noted for his toughness.
Praising a fighter’s durability first and foremost can be damning them with faint praise. As a boxing writer one reaches into a bag of adjectives when summing up a fighter. When you’re reaching for “resilient” or “determined” before “unbeaten” or “world class” you can be doing a fighter a disservice. But Perez sums up the former descriptors quite well.
After all, how else does one sum up a boxer who has faced an excellent level of competition, gone 25-5 while doing so and has never been stopped? To call Perez tough is an act of praise that also fairly assesses his credentials. This is not a fighter who is likely to lift the sport’s biggest prizes. But ‘Ricky’ is a fine gatekeeper all the same.
Perez actually stepped out of that role a little in his last outing. The Mexican scored a win over former world champion Joseph Diaz Jr. ‘Jo Jo’ has reigned as IBF super featherweight champion but his career has hit the skids recently. Weight troubles and addiction issues outside of the ring have blunted the once-strident talent.
Perez took advantage of this decline, administering Diaz’s fourth loss in his last five fights. The upset victory has propelled the perennial fringe contender into the spotlight. Perez himself had lost three of his last four going in. The Diaz upset was a much-needed tonic to keep his slim hopes alive.
Fighting Muratalla is something of a free hit, all things considered. Win here and Perez suddenly goes from obscurity to the upper reaches of the lightweight division. But Muratalla is where he is for a reason.
‘Danger’ has steadily moved through the tiers, arriving as one of the world’s top contenders. Whether he’s been dismantling unbeaten contenders like Diego Torres or turning over the world-ranked likes of Jeremia Nakathila and ex-champs like Farmer, Muratalla has looked like a future star.
Now Muratalla gets a chance to ratify his career rise against a formidable but beatable opponent. This should be Muratalla’s masterpiece. Berinchyk, Lomachenko and Stevenson will be watching.

Raymond Muratalla vs Jesus Perez Prediction
The big question here is whether Muratalla can get the stoppage. The likes of Danielito Zorrilla and Alexis Rocha have failed to finish Perez. The Mexican’s chin has stood up to a lot over the years.
But Muratalla carries some whack. Ask Nakathila, who went out in the second stanza against ‘Danger’. Or Torres, whose unbeaten record was left on the mat after eight rounds.
I think Muratalla becomes the first to stop Perez. I’m going for the Californian by knockout at 6/5.
