Murodjon Akhmadaliev vs Luis Castillo Fight Preview
Akhmadaliev is a brave man. He steps through the ropes on Friday night knowing the biggest fight of his career hangs precariously in the balance. Lose to the unheralded Castillo in Guadalajara and an undisputed super bantamweight title showdown with Naoya Inoue evaporates…again.
Akhmadaliev has been here before. When Inoue began his conquest of the 122lb weight class, ‘MJ’ held the WBA and IBF crowns. ‘The Monster’ scooped the WBC and WBO straps with an eight-round stoppage of Stephen Fulton. All Akhmadaliev had to do was beat former WBO boss Marlon Tapales.
In an awkward, all-southpaw scrap, Tapales won a split decision to take the titles and the date with Inoue. Two marks of 115-113 in the challenger’s favour smothered a bizarre 118-110 card for the Uzbek to secure the Tapales victory.
Inoue would trounce Tapales in 10 rounds while Akhmadaliev looked for a way back to the biggest fight of his career. Matchroom supremo Eddie Hearn banged the drum for the Inoue bout outside the ring while Akhmadaliev held up his end inside of it.
‘MJ’ knocked out the 26-0-1 Kevin Gonzalez in eight rounds in his comeback. Akhmadaliev followed that up with a three-round destruction of Rafael Espinoza to capture the WBA interim super bantamweight championship.
That spurious bauble is not on the line in this 10-rounder. The point of winning it was to secure a crack at Inoue’s undisputed championship. With that fight almost in the bag, the counterfeit world strap is less relevant.
The Inoue scrap was actually announced when both men still had fights approaching. ‘Kaibutsu’ ticked his box by climbing off the deck to stop Ramon Cardenas in eight rounds earlier this month. Akhmadaliev should have an easier time with Castillo, in theory. But he has been down this road before.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
It is different this time, admittedly. Tapales was a former world champion and that bout had half of the undisputed crown on the line. This is a 10-rounder on an undercard and Castillo is coming in after a year lay-off with a 31-6 ledger.
‘La Sombra’ is the sort of fighter that usually gets these keep-busy assignments. Not quite a journeyman himself, but most of his wins came against fighters of that ilk. The odd loss to a recognisable face, such as a fifth-round knockout defeat to former WBO bantamweight champion Tomoki Kameda. British fans might even remember his COVID-era visit to Matchroom HQ for a unanimous decision loss to Kash Farooq in the Scotsman’s final fight.
Throw in the aforementioned 13 months since Castillo’s last outing and it is easy to see why he has been chosen for this dubious honour. The idea is that the Mexican will roll over for Akhmadaliev.
But this card is headlined by another fighter from Mexico who was supposed to be fodder for a well-backed favourite. Manuel Gallegos ended up clubbing amateur standout Khalil Coe in nine brutal rounds, leading to Friday’s rematch. Could we be in for the same again?

Murodjon Akhmadaliev vs Luis Castillo Prediction
I might have invoked Gallegos’ upset heroics against Coe, but I do not feel a repeat is in order. Akhmadaliev has lost just once as a pro and Tapales was a world class opponent. Castillo is a few rungs below that level.
Complacency is always a risk, but Akhmadaliev will be aware of the stakes. Lose here and that Inoue fight never comes back. It would likely spell the end for him in terms of world title opportunities. The 30-year-old knows how much is riding on this.
Akhmadaliev has outstanding punch variety, excellent power and the ability to prevail in the trenches if need be, as he showed in his title-winning split decision over Daniel Roman.
A gut-check like that is unlikely to be necessary in Guadalajara. Some very average fighters have beaten Castillo. Akhmadaliev is anything but average. I’m backing him to win at 1/33.
