Raymond Muratalla takes on Tevin Farmer this Saturday, July 13 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. The lightweight 10-rounder takes place on the undercard of the IBF and WBO middleweight title battle between Janibek Alimkhanuly and Andrei Mikhailovich. Sky Sports Action will broadcast the fight.

Here are my Muratalla vs Farmer predictions ahead of an intriguing crossroads clash.

Muratalla vs Farmer Tips

  • Muratalla on points @ 7/4
  • Fight to go the distance - Yes @ 11/8

Muratalla and Farmer have taken very different paths to get here. But Muratalla would probably be quite happy to have the achievements of his Saturday opponent on his resume one day. While Muratalla opens as the favourite, he goes in with a man who held the IBF super featherweight championship as recently as three years ago.

Muratalla’s journey is the classic boxing rise. ‘Danger’ is 20-0 with 16 knockouts on his ledger. He has built steadily, stopping a stream of journeymen before graduating to gatekeepers and now contenders.

Blotching the unbeaten record of Diego Torres and prevailing against former title challenger Jeremia Nakathila set Muratalla up in the world rankings. A decision last time out over seasoned campaigner Xolisani Ndongeni kept him in the global reckoning. Now he takes on the hardest fight in his young career.

Farmer never lived the charmed existence that Muratalla enjoys. ‘American Idol’ admits he did not take boxing seriously after first turning pro. His record reflects that, with the Philadelphia man going 7-4-1 in his first 12 outings. For most, that would be enough to condemn them to journeyman territory. Doomed to exist as a test for emerging pros and nothing more.

But Farmer went on to do something no one predicted, winning his ensuing 18 fights. This incredible run earned a shot at the vacant IBF super featherweight title against Kenichi Ogawa. A split decision defeat looked to have ended this real-life Rocky story. But Ogawa was stripped of the title and the result was switched to a No Contest after he failed a drug test.

The IBF acted fairly, matching the unfairly-beaten Farmer for their vacant belt again. This time, ‘American Idol’ attained championship status by outpointing hometown hero Billy Dib in Australia. Four successful defences followed, including wins over Britain’s James Tennyson and tough Irishman Jono Carroll, as the Cinderella story continued.

Joseph ‘JoJo’ Diaz would dispossess Farmer in his fifth defence, winning a unanimous decision. Now 33 years old, Farmer has had a career few thought possible after his mixed early results. Three wins since the Diaz defeat have kept him in the world reckoning and now he aims for a championship at a new weight.

But Muratalla is a mighty obstacle to find in your way in such a quest. Not that Farmer is any stranger to obstacles. Aside from those ropey early showings, he was also shot in the hand in 2017. The injury was so bad doctors urged him to retire, but by the end of the year Farmer was fighting for his first world title. This is not a fighter who gives up easily, let’s put it that way.

Muratalla vs Farmer Prediction

Farmer winning here would be a most wonderful story. But sport does not always anoint us with the most gorgeous narrative. Sometimes, grim reality sets in and the natural order is allowed to reign.

Unfortunately I am predicting a fallen ‘Idol’ in this one. I feel Muratalla will take a decision victory to bolster his own charge on world honours. My selection is priced at 7/4. Farmer’s career will go down as one of the great narratives, but the ending will sadly not pass Hollywood muster, I feel.
