Fawaz vs Kelly Odds

Late bloomer Fawaz is 4/11 to secure victory in Wolverhampton. Kelly is from nearby Birmingham and you can back him at 23/10 to make sure those belts make the short journey back with him. The draw is priced at 16/1.

Fawaz vs Kelly Fight Preview

Fawaz is a web of contradictions that tell the contradictory tale of life in modern Britain. While the privileged cry about a country “colonised by immigrants” and the easily-led misdirect their anger towards that same long-hanging fruit, the reality is far different from the rage-bait headlines and lopsided discourse.

Fawaz has lived in Britain since he was 14 years of age. Abused as a child and trafficked upon arrival in the UK, Fawaz recovered from a lifetime of horrors to enjoy a ring career decked in glory. He is the reigning British and Commonwealth champion and a former holder of the English title. A decorated representative of the England national team as an amateur boxer.

But, Fawaz has not been given a British passport. This brilliant and resilient man is a champion that this small island does not claim.

How is it, then, that we keep hearing how it is so easy for immigrants coming to this country? You will have heard people chipping off about the supposed ‘five-star’ treatment refugees receive on these shores. Maybe you have spouted such venom yourself. Perhaps you will consider your odious words upon hearing of a man who wears amateur medals and professional belts in the name of the only home he has known since the age of 14. Perhaps you will not, because vicious invective aimed at the helpless fills a self-injurious void where your empathy used to sit.

Fawaz has faced tougher tests outside the ring than any he will meet inside the ropes. But Kelly is a stern night’s work for any professional boxer. I was ringside when he pushed Caoimhin Agyarko to the absolute limit in Sheffield last year. The Irishman used the majority decision win to springboard into world title contention. But Agyarko won’t forget his uncomfortable night opposite ‘Ruthless’ Ryan.

Pushing favoured men to the precipice is where Kelly excels. Kieron Conway and Brad Pauls snuck past him on splits. Gerome Warburton had to make do with a draw. Only Hamzah Sheeraz, who fights for the WBO super middleweight belt later this month, has stopped the gritty Kelly.

Fawaz is no stranger to a close fight. A draw with unbeaten prospect Junaid Bostan is what sparked his mid-30s spring into championship class. Fawaz won their rematch on a majority decision to claim the English title.

His reputation as a maestro of the upset peaked when he out-scored Ishmael Davis, once world-ranked, to claim the British and Commonwealth straps he so proudly holds. A split decision win was transformative for Fawaz. Both for his burgeoning boxing career and to garner increased coverage for his plight to be recognised as a citizen of the country he represents as its super welterweight champion.

Boxing saves. People find all kinds of things between those ropes. A purpose. A focus.  A surrogate family. An escape from factors both external and internal. Fawaz’s boxing journey is one that sees him fighting for his very identity. Thanks to his in-ring successes, his story will reach corners of the globe that will have one time felt impossible. If that isn’t a good reason to fight, I don’t know what is.

Fawaz vs Kelly Prediction

Both men have grit. Each are more likely to stand and bang than retreat when the heat reaches critical. Fawaz walked through fire against Davis. Kelly nearly burned Agyarko’s world title dreams to dust.

I think the fresher Fawaz will find it easier in the later rounds. Kelly has an engine on him but he has been in more wars. I reckon the champion outlasts him to retain his championship on points at 6/5.
