WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios faces the uneven, but immensely popular, Ryan Garcia this Saturday, February 21. The 12-round title affair is staged by The Ring and the event’s High Stakes suffix is no exaggeration. The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, synonymous with big fight occasions, will host the match-up.

DAZN will broadcast the event live with an undercard featuring 140lbs champions Richardson Hitchins of the IBF and WBA boss Gary Antuanne Russell. Read on for my Barrios vs Garcia predictions.

Barrios vs Garcia Odds

Barrios is 7/4 to win this one with ‘KingRy’ favoured at 1/2. The draw is priced at 14/1.

If you fancy a knockout, Barrios is 9/2 to stop his man while Garcia is 6/4 to do likewise. The fight is a 10/11 shot to go the distance.

Barrios vs Garcia Fight Preview

Ryan Garcia is boxing’s great modern conundrum. A social media-savvy star who surpassed a million followers before making a dent in the world rankings, ‘KingRy’ is a thoroughly modern monarch. But the 27-year-old’s flair for self-sabotage has blocked his reputation from ever reaching the lofty heights of his popularity.

Garcia has courted controversy with everything from racist and homophobic X rants to misdemeanour charges for the alleged vandalising of an ex-girlfriend’s home. While such conduct is deplorable, it is sadly part and parcel of a sport that welcomes those on the fringes of society, as long as they can punch.

Some aimed to dismiss Garcia’s firebrand persona as the folly of youth, the ramblings of someone who was a worldwide celebrity before they had hairs on their chin. But the fighter dragged his controversy into the ring in April 2024. A fight with Devin Haney promised to be career-defining. In many tragic ways, it was.

The issues began at the weigh-in. Garcia missed weight and thus was not eligible to contest Haney’s WBC super lightweight strap. But ‘The Dream’ agreed to face an opponent over three pounds above the divisional weight limit.

On the night that looked like a fool’s errand, as Garcia knocked Haney down three times to claim a majority decision. The asterisk initially paled in comparison to the size of the victory. But when Garcia’s post-fight drugs test returned a positive, with traces of Ostarine found in his system, the asterisk swallowed the achievement.

The result was changed to a No Contest with the boxing world split. Some, particularly Garcia’s fans, cling to the “I saw what I saw” theory and fully credit ‘KingRy’ with beating Haney. But most see that grim and grubby night for what it was. A chemically enhanced athlete who had not properly cut weight pounding on a clean boxer who had. An injustice.

Mario Barrios vs Ryan Garcia - Method Of Victory
Garcia to win by KO

Odds correct at time of publishing.

Garcia aimed to make a mockery of his detractors upon his ring return. Following his suspension, Garcia took to the ring last May on The Ring’s Time Square fight card. But tenacious warrior Rolando Romero had other plans.

What was supposed to serve as Garcia’s chance to finally win a world title, albeit the WBA’s spurious ‘regular’ definition, turned into a waking nightmare for the Californian. Rolly rolled over our subject, knocking Ryan down in the second round and taking a unanimous decision.

Which makes Garcia’s position here confusing, at least in a sporting sense. It is over two years since Garcia’s last official victory. Arguably, it has been four years since his last truly significant win, the stoppage of Team GB Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell in 2021.

Wins over Oscar Duarte, Javier Fortuna and Emmanuel Tagoe stand out far less than the 2023 KO defeat to another troubled boxer; Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. But Garcia is a name and he is young enough to be rehabilitated. Marketable and popular. A proven pay-per-view draw. Still in his 20s. There will, for now, always be people willing to put Ryan Garcia in a boxing ring.

But the fighter would do well to observe the plight of Adrien Broner. ‘The Problem’ was touted as the next Floyd Mayweather before complacency, an erratic nature and legal issues tanked his career. Broner never won another world title when after his own 27th birthday, going 3-3-1 with dwindling public interest.

Garcia must seize this opportunity with both hands. Barrios struggled mightily with an inactive 26-year-old Manny Pacquiao in his last title defence. The Filipino superstar deserved to go home with that WBC belt in the eyes of many. Garcia has beaten better boxers than Barrio. But this time, his career depends on it.

Barrios vs Garcia Prediction

Barrios will not be allowed to leave the gaps which the retired Manny waltzed through against Garcia. ‘Pacman’ was never a concussive puncher up at welterweight. Garcia is yet to score a knockout at 147lbs, but his career record of 20 stoppages from 24 wins spells danger for the champion.

Barrios has drawn his last two title defences, with Abel Ramos holding him to a stalemate despite losing three of his previous five fights. ‘El Azteca’ is a middling champion, with his best victory coming in 2023 over Pacquiao-conqueror Yordenis Ugas. Losses to Keith Thurman and Gervonta Davis show a boxer who is brave but overmatched against the best.

Is Garcia one of the best? Not yet. But a convincing win over Barrios could belatedly put him on that path. I’m backing ‘KingRy’ by KO at 6/4.
