Undisputed flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora gets a late replacement this Saturday, September 20 as she takes on Alexas Kubicki. Original challenger Ayelen Granadino was denied a visa to enter America for the clash, with Kubicki coming in on less than a week’s notice. The bout will be broadcast live on DAZN from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

Here are my Fundora vs Kubicki predictions.

Fundora vs Kubicki Odds

Fundora is a giant favourite at 1/25, giving the champion a 96.2% implied probability of victory. Challenger Kubicki is priced at 11/1 while you can back the draw at 20/1.

Fundora vs Kubicki Fight Preview

Like the evening’s headliner, unified minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo, Fundora’s achievements are slept on because they arrived in the lower weight classes. While the focus of the world is on Katie Taylor, Claressa Shields and Lauren Price; the dominance Fundora has shown at flyweight goes under the radar.

The industry started to wake up last year, even if the mainstream fanbase is yet to follow. Fundora picked up Female Fighter of the Year gongs from The Ring, Boxing Writer’s Association of America and ESPN. But there is still a way to go before female flyweight action is given the global shine that the lightweight, welterweight and super middleweight divisions have enjoyed.

All one can do is fight and win. The rest is just marketing. Fundora knocked out Arely Mucino to claim the IBF flyweight strap back in October 2023. Finishing a three-time and reigning world champion in five rounds was a statement that put the division on notice.

The flyweight class has never been taken formally off-notice ever since. ‘Sweet Poison’ has cut a swathe through her fellow 112-pounders. Wins over contenders Christina Cruz and Daniela Asenjo opened the door for the undisputed title fight Fundora craved.

Fundora was ready for the spotlight and stopped WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring champion Gabriela Alaniz in seven rounds. The latter hit the deck twice in that seventh-and-final stanza, as Fundora went from prospect to superstar at the age of 22.

The new undisputed titlist matched that result earlier this year, taking out Marilyn Badillo in seven rounds. Now Fundora goes in with an opponent who has never been stopped. The same was true of original foe Granadino, though the Argentine has actually lost one more fight than 13-1 Kubicki.

Numbers are a surface level interpretation of boxing, of course. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has 54 professional wins, but nobody thinks the Mexican disappointment is superior to, say, 18-win Vasiliy Lomachenko. It isn’t how many times you win, but who you defeat in doing so, that is truly important.

Kubicki did provide the first blemish on the unbeaten record of Alondra Yamile Hernandez Mendoza last time out and currently sits eighth in the WBA flyweight rankings. There have been far worse late-notice world title challengers in the past. But this is still a huge ask for the Canadian.

That is less a reflection of her abilities and more an example of how good Fundora has been. The question here is less whether ‘Sweet Poison’ can win and more a case of how impressively can she do so?

Fundora vs Kubicki Prediction

This is a challenge that looks made for Fundora. With all due respect to Kubicki, the undisputed champion has beaten better fighters consistently over the past couple of years. Experienced champions and seasoned challengers. Kubicki is a decent opponent but not the sort who will stretch one of boxing’s more dominant champions. Fundora to win is 1/25.
