Why

Prominent British heavyweight Dillian Whyte returns to the ring this Saturday, December 14 against Ebenezer Tetteh. The bout takes place over 10 rounds at Europa Sports Complex in Gibraltar. The fight airs live on DAZN.

Here are my Whyte vs Tetteh predictions ahead of this heavyweight humdinger.

Whyte vs Tetteh Betting Tips

  • Whyte by knockout @ 1/6
  • Whyte in round six @ 14/1

Oh, Dillian. You once promised so much. At the turn of the decade you could make a real argument that Whyte was the best heavyweight not holding a world title belt. Unless you count the WBC interim strap he wore for three years of course.

That was part of the problem. While Whyte was beating top heavies like Derek Chisora and Joseph Parker, that elusive title shot wouldn’t arrive. ‘The Body Snatcher’ had rebuilt brilliantly from losing a 2015 thriller to Anthony Joshua. Carving up the likes of Robert Helenius, Mariusz Wach, Lucas Browne and Oscar Rivas had established Whyte as the best of the rest.

But Whyte kept getting put in situations where he had to prove his worth again and again. Far worse fighters have secured championship bouts having done far less to earn them.

The bloom came off the rose when former WBA champion Alexander Povetkin knocked Whyte out in five rounds in the pandemic-enforced environs of Eddie Hearn’s garden. Whyte avenged the result in a rematch, at the same venue he’ll box in on Saturday night. ‘The Body Snatcher’ finished Povetkin in four rounds to put his world title ambitions back on track.

Perversely, Whyte’s vulnerabilities are probably what finally secured the title fight he’d deserved for so long. Whyte matched then-WBC kingpin Tyson Fury on St George’s Day 2022 at Wembley Stadium. But Whyte was out-gamed and then out-gunned by ‘The Gypsy King’. Fury knew too much and could match Whyte’s attempts to roughhouse. It was a humiliating defeat for Whyte. One you could argue he has never quite recovered from.

There has been just two ring outings since for Whyte. A majority decision win over Jermaine Franklin that many felt he was lucky to get. That was supposed to lead to a long-anticipated rematch with Joshua, but Whyte failed a drugs test and the payday actually went to the man he had just conquered, Franklin.

‘The Body Snatcher’ looked better in rolling over Christian Hammer in three rounds. But the aging former fringe contender had lost three of his last five and been knocked out in four rounds by Joe Joyce in his most recent outing. Still, as a fight to get Whyte’s name back out there it did the trick. For the first time in two years, Whyte was a factor at heavyweight again.

Tetteh probably isn’t the opponent most had in my mind for Whyte’s continuing rebuild. While the 36-year-old is 23-1, that loss came in short order against the only notable fighter he has ever faced. Current IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois blitzed Tetteh in one round in the Accra man’s only fight outside Ghana.

That isn’t a great omen for anyone. Apart from Whyte, that is. The former world title challenger probably won’t get much credit for blitzing this guy, but at least he gets to close out 2024 with a second win. It is long overdue. Amazingly, you have to go back to 2019 for the last time Whyte scored two wins in the same calendar year.

Whyte vs Tetteh Prediction

Without being unfair on Tetteh here, these men exist on different planets in terms of standing in the sport. Whyte has fought the very best in the world for over a decade. Tetteh has met one fighter who fits that description and was destroyed.

I don’t think this version of Whyte is capable of the short-burst destruction that Dubois is. But he has enough in the tank to make Tetteh’s life very difficult. I’m going for a grinding stoppage in round six at 14/1.
