Daniel Lapin vs Lewis Edmondson Fight Preview
This is a risky one for both men. Both are young with world rankings and unbeaten records to their name. But Lapin and Edmondson will lay all that on the line in front of a bumper Wembley Stadium crowd. This is proper boxing, folks.
Lapin is a fixture on Usyk’s undercards and that is no coincidence. The Polish-born Ukrainian is promoted by the world heavyweight champion through the Usyk 17 Promotions banner. A European Championship medalist as an amateur, Lapin has made it look pretty easy as a professional.
At 6’6 he is very tall for the weight, which plays into his style. Lapin is languid and calm, boxing out of the same southpaw stance as his mentor. The head movement and counter-punching is identifiably Ukrainian, echoing both Usyk and the recently-retired Vasiliy Lomachenko.
High praise indeed, and we are yet to see Lapin use those tools against a world class foe. But 14-0 Dylan Colin could not get near him last time out. The competition steps up again with Edmondson, a fighter who is accustomed to underdog status.
Edmondson broke through by shocking Dan Azeez last October for the vacant British and Commonwealth titles. Azeez was favoured to get back on top, having drifted after losing to friend-turned-rival Joshua Buatsi. But Edmondson produced the performance of his life to take the belts and Azeez’s place in the world standings.
A near-shutout against Nigeria’s Oluwatosin Kejawa in defence of his Commonwealth title only added fuel to the Edmondson fire. Now he takes a huge test against Lapin. ‘The Saint’ did not win titles and upset big names by resting on his laurels.
Edmondson is not a small guy by any means, standing 6’1. But the battle of the dimensions is beyond him, with Lapin having five inches of height on the Brit. This might hinder the Southampton man’s unconventional style.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Edmondson is a slick counter-puncher able to control tempo. He drops his hands, springs into action off the back-foot and utilises switch-hitting to open his opponents up. A brilliant style when executed well. But it is difficult to do against a fighter of Lapin’s size and skill.
This will be a fascinating technical match-up. Lapin’s style is straight off the Ukraine production line of slick southpaws. Perfected through years of excelling on the world stage. Edmondson often fights like he is obeying whatever has popped into his head. A switch of the feet. An impudent flick of the wrist, more irritant than debilitant. Then suddenly, a crushing uppercut because his opponent dared standstill for two seconds.
Lapin is a classical pianist. Edmondson plays jazz trumpet. Chopin is fighting Miles Davis. How often do you get to say that?

Daniel Lapin vs Lewis Edmondson Prediction
It is easy to be seduced by improvised brilliance. But as Prince Naseem Hamed found out when he lost to Marco Antonio Barrera, excellent improvisation can be beaten by impeccable orthodoxy.
I think Lapin is impeccable. The moves refined by his Ukrainian boxing forefathers are all over his game. He is a physical freak of nature. It is an intoxicating mixture that should out-fox all but the fiercest opponents.
Edmondson is game and gifted. He will have his moments. But they will not add up to enough rounds on the cards. I like Lapin for this one on points at 8/11.
