WBC mandatory challenger Dalton Smith makes a quick return to the ring this Saturday, April 19 when he takes on fringe contender Mathieu Germain. The bout takes place at the Canon Medical Arena in Smith’s hometown of Sheffield. DAZN will screen the event live.

Here are my Smith vs Germain predictions ahead of this super lightweight showdown.

Dalton Smith vs Mathieu Germain Odds

Smith is a big favourite as expected, pitched at 1/20 against Germain’s 8/1. If you fancy a draw, you’re a braver man than me. You can back that at 20/1.

Dalton Smith vs Mathieu Germain Fight Preview

You could make an argument that Smith does not need this fight. He is the mandatory challenger for the WBC super lightweight championship, which currently sits around the waist of Alberto Puello. Matchroom are confident of delivering that fight, so why tempt fate?

The answer could lie in the need to keep Smith sharp. Puello is permitted to make a voluntary defence of his WBC belt next, with his March win over Sandor Martin fulfilling his mandatory obligation for now. Smith only managed one outing in 2024 and waiting around for Puello to have another camp and a bout before being able to face him could lead to another one-fight year.

That is why Smith is gloving up for the second time in 2025 already. His first bout saw ‘Thunder’ crush Walid Ouizza in one round to clinch the vacant European super lightweight title. That felt like a last hurrah for the Sheffield fighter at domestic and continental level.

A retrograde step perhaps, considering Smith had already iced former world title challenger Jose Zepeda in five rounds in his previous fight. But you can understand the Sheffield man wanting to pick up the missing piece for his collection, adding the European belt to the British and Commonwealth crowns.

Dalton Smith vs Mathieu Germain - Round Group Betting Smith in Rounds 4-6

Odds correct at time of publishing.

Now he goes in with Germain, 14th-ranked by the IBF. He’s a capable fighter on an eight-bout winning streak. That winning run kicked-off with the best victory on Germain’s record, a split nod over fellow Canadian Steve Claggett in a rematch from a previous draw. The latter went on to challenge Teofimo Lopez for the WBO championship, lasting the distance with ‘The Takeover’ before losing on points.

Germain’s resume does lack big-time fights since that fine win. He scored a points win over Zsolt Osadan, who once lost to Sean McComb. Most of the rest of his quarry have been Canadian domestic talent or journeymen.

The Quebec native has not lost since 2021, but he suffered two defeats before this hot streak. Uriel Perez stopped him in five rounds, before succumbing to Maurice Hooker in the first round of his next fight.

Yves Ulysse Jr. is responsible for the other defeat on his record, a seventh-round TKO. Ulysse has taken former world champion Ismael Barroso the distance and also holds a solid win over Cletus Seldin.

Smith is better than either of the men who have stopped Germain. The Sheffield puncher has more power and more polish. This should be a showcase ahead of the ‘Thunder’ title shot. Puello might want to look away because he is not going to relish fighting Dalton Smith.

Dalton Smith vs Mathieu Germain Predictions

I see this being another dominant Dalton display. ‘Thunder’ has got a knack for these sort of tasks now and looks ready for his title shot. Anything less than a world champion is light work for him at the moment.

I reckon Smith gets this done in rounds 4-6, breaking his man down before ending matters before midway. If you want to back my selection you can at odds of 5/2.
