Cintron vs Sandoval Predictions: Late sub is clear and present danger for Cintron

Former world title challenger Jeyvier Cintron must adjust to late replacement Victor Efrain Sandoval this Saturday, January 10. He had been set to square off with perennial contender Jonathan Rodriguez before the Puerto Rican withdrew due to visa issues.
The 10-round bantamweight contest takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event goes out live on PPV.com, headlined by Sheffield’s Dalton Smith challenging Subriel Matias for the WBC super lightweight title. Read on for my Cintron vs Sandoval predictions.
Cintron is your 2/9 favourite to prevail here. Sandoval comes in as a late replacement at 18/5 while the draw is marketed at 16/1.
Cintron vs Sandoval Fight Preview
It is a frustrating reality a boxer has to face when an opponent pulls out of a fight. Rodriguez’s visa issues have not only denied the fans an enticing meeting of former world title challengers, but they have also thrown a spanner into the works for Cintron as he prepares for his first bout of 2026.
A late replacement is always a lottery. Usually a lesser fighter than the initial opponent, sometimes that uncertainty can prove disastrous. Andy Ruiz Jr stepped in for Jarrell Miller after ‘Big Baby’ failed a drugs test, knocking out Anthony Joshua to become immortal as a unified heavyweight champion. Yordenis Ugas was a late replacement against Thomas Dulorme and Manny Pacquiao. Despite his underdog status, he won both bouts and reigned as WBA welterweight champion for a period.
So Cintron must be on his game as he squares off with Sandoval, installed midweek as his new opponent. While an on-paper downgrade on Rodriguez, he is far from a journeyman. Sandoval will be approaching this fight thinking he can win.
The 38-5 Mexican is nicknamed ‘Chucky’, but this fight will be anything but child’s play. However, Sandoval has hung in there in good company. The 28-year-old has gone the distance with world-ranked contender Yankiel Rivera and reigning WBC super flyweight champion Ricardo Sandoval (no relation).
The other three losses on his record occurred in his teens. A quite normal fistic upbringing for a Mexican pro. The nation’s proud boxing heritage is built on fighters forged in the fires of pro competition when they were young, rather than the typical amateur schooling.
Sandoval should not be underestimated. But then one could argue talking up his chances is underestimating Cintron in some way. After all, this is a man who contested the WBO flyweight championship back in 2019.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Cintron lost on that occasion via unanimous decision to Kazuto Ioka, the great four-weight world champion from Japan. But it was a fine performance from the challenger. Cintron boxed well on the back foot, using speed and movement to rack up the early rounds. Ioka’s pressure told as the fight wore on, but the decision could arguably have gone either way. It felt like a building block for Cintron’s future.
It would be five years before Cintron boxed again. The reasons for this fight-gap range from the grimly commonplace (depression, injuries) to the amusingly unconventional (he won reality TV show Exatlon). Still only 30, the confident Puerto Rican is determined to return to world class.
A first-round knockout of journeyman Carlos Mujica was an exercise in cobweb-removal. But a WBO international bantamweight title win over Mexico’s Rashib Martinez Valadez over 10 rounds put Cintron back on the map.
A collision with a fellow former title challenger was the intended rocket strapped to Cintron’s back. That craft has spluttered to a stop, through no fault of his own. But Cintron must take this opportunity to top up the rocket fuel and shoot for the stars with a superb display against Diaz here.

Cintron vs Sandoval Prediction
Cintron has warmed to his task now, with two fact-finding fights out of the way. No fights in 2025 is a bit of a concern, but if he felt he was ready for Rodriguez I am confident he is in good enough fettle for Sandoval. I reckon Cintron gets the win at 2/9.
